Correct only trim button is on the control box and those wires look to be in the correct order. It does have wires coming out at the plug but they are not wired to anything

that plug is for tach/gauges and/or acc. I believe..

red should be "center" pin in harness... best I remember?

no switch at tha motor was tha norm back then.. that red ya havin' tha problem with supplies power to tha button on tha control box.. when ya have a button at tha motor its powered straight off tha battery supply on tha sol.. keep plunkin' at it.. you'll find it.. gl.

Thanks for all the help. Here's an update: Got home and got a wiring diagram, everything looks to be in order and hooked up correctly. The only thing that was out of the ordinary was a ground wire coming off of the starter. The starter had three wires coming off of it. the jumper from the solenoid, the negative cable off the bottom, and then a jumper from the motor to the top of the starter. When I removed that third cable I finally started to get some feedback from the motor. I now get a click from the trim switch when pushing down but nothing when pushing up. I also get a sequence of beeps from the control box when I turn the key and a click when I turn it to start but that is it. Hoping that this gives someone more info in helping narrow down the issue.

You can try adding one wire at a time to the silnoid that will help eliminate the bad circuits.

wire on bottom is neg straight from batt... has to be there for anything ta work and run.. middle is starter positive from start sol... top is ground for starter.. all three need ta be attached as they are... tha batt. neg is only thing that relates to t n t.. tha click ya hear should be start sol pullin' in... tha "beeps" ya hear should be tha "self check" oiler warning module….

if you say removin' "third" wire meaning tha top wire on starter then tha starter is probably toast and shortin' out...

Yes that is what I'm thinking is happening. when I get home I will swap starters with another motor I have and see what happens but that still doesn't answer the question as to why it shorted in the first place and why the trim doesn't work

starters can take a dump anytime for no apparent reason...

one thing atta time.. with starter positive disconnected at start sol. try trim buttons and listen for sol. to pull in. if they don't, jump up n down at solenoids (big posts).. when button is pushed check for 12v to ground at tha small green (down) and small blue (up) post on tha solenoids.. those may be green/white and blue/white.. this should work
with key off jus pushin' tha trim buttons...
