Neat to see spectators watching from the top of those boathouse roofs!

    Attachment 440098

The race was in Parry Sound, 1973.. part of the Belvedere Challenge Cup Series. In one long weekend, we raced in three different towns/cities - Saturday in Orillia, Sunday in North Bay and Monday in Parry Sound.

Yes , 73 was a higher level year as was 74. Great picture. They likely built for the low years in the early mid 60s. We're pretty close or more this year, just under 86 level.
This pic was posted by peterse90 on another thread, same venue I believe. With a young kid's head on a swivel watching.

Canadian Francis Kinette driving an SJ BURNS Craft. This BURNS was fairly fast down the straights but was VERY quick in the corners, a very well balanced set-up.

I raced a Burns for 2 years in SJ. Good handling in the straights and while the other SJ guys were scrubbing all their speed off in the turns by burying their hulls to turn sharp next to buoys, my Burns would float thru the turns in a greater arc and higher speed giving me 3 boat lengths in the lead right after the turn and stable at speed for the next straight run. When you do that for the laps, guess who got 1st place? I never really lifted my throttle foot on inboard courses.

I think the SJ kilo record was well over 100 mph.

What ever became of Francis Kinette? He just sorta disappeared after the picklefork Shultz boat he waited so long to get. Any what became of this Burns Craft?

Rare indeed. The lower unit and 20" mid section were handicaps. However, Roger Meekins from Baltimore ran real good with a 140/Hydrostream Ventura in JP class in the mid 80s against the XS Mercs.
Looks like a Don Henrich prop, probably his 27 cleaver.

Did Howard Pipkorn actually build this boat? (Piece-built wood construction). I have the utmost respect for anybody willing to run an OMC V4 in a sport class dominated by Mercs. Was the idea back then to use the OMC V4 lower power curve to swing a large pitch cleaver? I never could get a big thru hub exhaust cleaver to work but it was a different story swinging a round ear bass boat prop in SJ. I never could see good rpm's on the top end with anything above 27 inches. The guys who could make anything like 28-30 inches work must have had hulls made out of paper (LOL).

It's been a long time since we've had such events there. Could it been done today?

I was there as well, same !

Pipkorn (Hydrostream) built it, not wood, molded FRP. Prop is probably a 27P, which is what was offered for the 140.
