I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I have a pic somewhere of a Stream tunnel on the factory race trailer over a vee bottom boat.

I never could get a big thru hub exhaust cleaver to work but it was a different story swinging a round ear bass boat prop in SJ. I never could see good rpm's on the top end with anything above 27 inches. The guys who could make anything like 28-30 inches work must have had hulls made out of paper (LOL).

Sport J Steering Arms - Stock / Altered Rules

How did everyone get around the stock configuration rules when it came to using either the tubular racing arms (Twister) or stamped bead arms (T2 or T3) on Merc 1400 or 1500 Sport J motors? Either method required the removal of the small cheek tower cowl located under the engine pan. Not using this cowl wasn't really "stock"? Even the 1500XS motors had this cheek trim cowl. I went to the trouble of splitting this cowl and attaching with brackets on my T2 stamped steering arms.

    Another SJ picture. David Lee.
David Lee, Doug Pearl and John Sherlock were 3 of the very dominant SJ drivers back when SJ class was thriving.

I think the rules allowed cutting a "window" in the lower cover for the steering arm attaching as long as it still retained the original shape, some of the decal, etc.

Lee, Pearl and Sherlock were the primary force why none of us Sport J guys on the west coast never ventured back east to race or take our chances at the nationals. A few brave souls from CA (Hoffman, Johnson, etc) would go back there and see these 3 guys pass them like they had their motors idling in neutral (LOL). They managed to swing some very large pitch propellers that the rest of us could only "lug" at mid range.
