Sticky timer base.
So if it's not one thing its another. Motor runs, idles high. Inspected a motor at the shop, it's timer base moves freely and unrestricted. Inspected mine...... Nope, sticky. To the point that the "black cigar thing" actually has to push it back, which puts resistance on the shifter, which I've noticed but not sure what was causing it. So how can I free it up?

It’s the insulation melting/breaking down in the stator.
Youll have to pull the flywheel, stator and timer and use acetone to clean the residue.
Inspect your stator and if the gooh is coming from it, it’s toast.
If you’re lucky it came from a previous stator but wouldn’t explain existing condition.
The stator heats under load and may run fine on the hose.
Buy a stator.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Instigator, can that be done without altering the current timing settings?

I had a sticky timer base from the plastic ring that slides, the grease had gotten sticky and acted more like glue. I think I ended up replacing the ring too.............cant remember. But its easy enough to check while you are there........clean and re-grease.

Yea x2 with get a stator if it's even melted a little just going to be a pain in the ass even if it lasts a bit better than getting stuck on the water

When you pull the flywheel, DO NOT strike the puller or flywheel with a hammer; you will loosen the magnets if you do. And if you do remove the flywheel, get the magnet retainer kit the Pro Marine sells or get it cheaper thru Walmart...

The goo from the stator is a pain to remove, I have luck using a can of engine tuner (usually end up using the whole can)

Wow. Thank you guys. Yes there is goo coming off. Not sure if it's from another stator, but suspect it's from this one.

I think the last time I got some of that mess off that area, I used a sharp chisel as a scraper in the areas where I could actually get to. That stuff is the worst..............sticky and thick is a very "light hearted" description of that mess. Good luck.
