    If you stay below 7000-7500 rpm, 1:40 is enough. Above there, you need 1:32, because the fuel curve leans out so much that you need more oil in the fuel to get enough per revolution.

    I don't think this is a matter of oil mixture, though.

    These motors are not meant to putt around. Gotta figure it will see north of 7k....Merc says 32-1 and Jay Smith backs it up.

    With the same rotating assembly, Mercury recommended 1:40 for the fishing version of the 280 with a 7770 rpm limiter and 1:32 for the ROS version with an 8200 rpm limiter.

    The same should apply to the 260. The rpm range I posted above should give plenty of margin.

    Resolved! Bumped the idle to 1200, it was below 1000 initially. Stays running every time now, just a little hard going in and out of gear if i need to do so. May lower a bit at a time and fine a better setting..

    problem is not solved, you're just going around it.
    you better start in gear or you'll have more problems.

    True. I will experiment will lowering the idle to find the sweet spot. Thanks again for the all the comments and suggestions.
