    v4 cross flow ignition

Has anyone tried an aftermarket capacitive discharge ignition and how did it work out. I am tired of changing triggers and power packs.

    Thanks in Advance,

What are the parameters that you are running your motor? The reason I ask is this, I have never had any problems with my omc stuff in regards to that. I have a 115 with hot heads( never ran it that hard tho). Its a 96 year motor. I got it with a bad cylinder, rebuilt it and got 4 or 5 more years out of it. It has the original ignition on it.

I have more stories of my v6 crossflows........same thing......electronics have never failed me. Now, I did check resistances of the things that I could before I installed them. That way, I knew I had good parts. I am not saying that they don't fail..........they do. But I don't have a track record with bad stuff from OMC.

What is the scenario with your motor?

    Thanks for the reply.
When the motor gets to about 6k it starts 4 stroking and when I pull the plugs, 2 and 4 are wet. It has an unlimited pack so its not a limiter issue. when checking voltages the port side is low. all new electronics, trigger, stator and power pack are all new.
it will clean out every once and awhile and then it turns about 7k rpm

    Thanks again
    Jim

At this point its all cdi. A lot of the OEM parts are now made by CDI.

So I guess no one has tried any other ignition other than stock?

There are others out there.....But i've come to discover that its a hush hush thing....just my opinion. I dunno why. The crossflows are dinosaurs and parts getting harder to get. I thought I remembered someone telling me they were using Yamaha electronics on their v6. But don't hold me to that. That was 3-4 years ago. You running the newer single powerpack with 4 leads or 2 powerpacks on each side?

I build programmable performance ignitions for snowmobile race engines. It's possible to do the same for the V4. I was going to do one for my own engine. Only problem is it won't work off the stock timing pick up system. So that would need to be changed.

The problem I am having is the inner magnet on the flywheel hits the timer base pickups. It shorts the timer base and takes out the pack. When this happens the motor starts 4 stroking at or above 6000 rpm. Plugs on port side are wet after a race. I change pack and timer base and its good for 3 or 4 laps then starts over. If I can delete the stock timer base I think my problems would be solved.

    Thanks for all the input.

    Jim

Can the magnet be milled down for clearance? Strange that factory stuff doesn't have the proper clearances..........are you running the factory flywheel?
