A Switzer Wing and Powercat
Does anybody know the drivers here? I know this was taken in Miami - it's from Randy Rabe's photo archive. I wish I could have seen boats like this in action. The twin Chryslers are just too cool. Also, am I correct in that it's a Powercat?
Thanks all!
Greg

Greg - Don't know about the twin Chrysler, but the wing is unmistakably Gene Lanham. You can always identify his boats by the trademark Duct Tape. It was rumored that he was sponsored by 3M and used the duct tape as an advertisement. However, sometimes even duct tape could not help...
As a New Yorker, you know how hard it is to get recognized in the New York Times let alone on the front page of the sports section. Not hard for Gene Lanham, though. Check this out...

You always say nice things, Bob!!
The twin Chrysler is driven by Steve Malone or his Dad—Bill
by the letters I can tell it is one of the Gold Coast Marathon—but held at Pelican Harbor Yacht Club. 1968?

Is the far boat wearing Chryslers a Kober Cat? One helluva seat the driver has.

I don’t think the 666 is a PowerCat—I think it is a Carl Mosely—-America Marc?? Need to ask Danny Legar—-

Correct, it is not a Power Cat, not sure what it actually is...............
I tend to agree with Sam, that it does have the look of a JavCat,
the deep freeboard, and the look of the dash area. Pretty sure its
wood construction also, with a clear coat deck, as was the norm on
JavCats.

I recall Bill Malone being Commodore of the South Florida Outboard Club about that time. When he first started running Chryslers Bill did all the driving. Later Steve resumed some of the driving duties until he wrecked his knee in a blow over at the Stadium. By then Steve was an airline pilot(Eastern I think) and did not drive again.

If you look at the 3 McCalls in this picture you can see the subtle differences. I don't think John ever built two boats alike.

Just fantastic, thank you Bob! I knew you guys wouldn’t let me down. The technology today is impressive but back then it looks like they were pushing it much harder. Sort of like the incredible experiments being done back in WWII with efforts to gain every possible last ounce of power out of the aircraft engines.
