    On the Race part catalogue
0B290... is starting serial number for a model for the 2.4 EFI
So it is possible to be a legit motor.
Mercury's serial numbers are consecutive of what they produced, but their production line could switch backwards and forwards between models quite randomly.
I do not know of a public site where, we the dealers can look up exactly what a serial number, was model wise.
It probably exists somewhere, but I have never come across it

They did not make 60 000 odd 200 XL motors in 1988.

don't know 60,000 but do know they built both bp and op (unpainted production block, usually identified, but like merc does, not always with a "200" stamped in one of tha welsh plugs) hi perf in carb and efi in '87/'88….. not an "odd" motor..

what makes it "unique" number comes up as a "production" number (in lieu of a "hi perf" designation) which most 200 "hi perf op's " will ina normal hunt... tha "naked block" but a "production number" is tha dead giveaway...
