    Sailors are different people.

I grew up on our families cruisers but my dads love was always sailing but we never had the time to sail.

He had from a 21’ sloop to a 36’ catch.

Pelee Island on Lake Erie is very popular for sailors.
    Mostly Canadians.

I have been lucky enough to have met many.

On our last visit, I met the captain/owner of a 40’ sloop as he was preparing to head out.
I could tell he’d been aboard a while and when I asked how long, he answered 6 wks!

Told me he and his wife got caught in a water spout that knocked their boat down.
    Twice!
Said she requested to be deposited on dry land and he obliged.

Had been on his own for the last 3 weeks.

He was preparing to head out so I followed him down the dock to lend a hand.
Other dockers heard/saw us coming and followed to help him get his large sailboat away from dock safely.

Ended up with 4 or 5 of us at his dock, to help.
As he put the tiny motor in gear to head out, by himself, on a 40’ boat (!!) I asked him where he was headed.
He hesitated as he looked around, pointed north then answered, “that way” and motored out.

Sailors are way different than power boaters and I like that about them.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

    Sailors.

    Love this video.

What do you do when your boats mast is taller than the bridges opening?

Special to me is this is the bridge in Indiantown Fla, in the cut across the state from Port Saint Lucie to Fort Myers which cuts hundreds of miles off getting from one coast to the other by boat.

My dad used to say, sailors go out when power boaters come in.

    trimarans are quicker upwind

    .

I thought that catamaran sailboats were the fastest out there for the pleasure market, but it seems it's the trimarans that are the quickest

    Now that’s baddd asssss.

The other records set by wind surfers, kite boarders, and pc’s not resembling boats??.
Cool that they’re wind power but they’re not sail boats.

That trimaran is bad ass though.

My dad was always infatuated w/sailing upwind, which you can do by “tacking” but the hull travels 3 times the distance zig zagging..., than the distance/direction you are heading for.

This trimaran sailing at 1.4 times wind speed..., now you have my attention.

Gorgeous boat, and model....., and the perfect ad for it.

    Great video.

I don’t think the bigger boat ever had his jib out?

Great shots of the guys hiking out on the Hobie!

There’s a popular sailing channel called Patrick Childress Sailing but unfortunately he recently died of COVID.

Back in the Late 80s and early 90s I bartended at Put-IN-Bay in Lake Erie. During the annual sailboat regatta week, all the bartenders would joke that the sailers would bring a pair of shorts and a $20 dollar bill......and not change either all week! But we cleaned up w- the powerboaters......

    Hilarious!

    They have that reputation.

You see way more sail boats spending the night on the hook.
I always thought it was for the solitude and serenity.

    Nope.
    Saving On dockage!

"the wind is free and so should everything be"

then you have the other end where the all carbon yacht costs a $million and we spend $50k for a few race days.
new mainsail every 2 years, another 50k
    ( I crew on one)

Yeah, they say Childress died of covid. So, if he was infected why did his wife not get it? If you have been on a sailboat for any length of time you know that it's near impossible to social distance and no masks. I call bs. And I followed the channel for a long time. Respected them both for what they did and how they lived.

I believe the woman said she got the virus and was able to fight it, Childress did not make it. That episode actually made me cry cause I too was following their channel, lots of good sailing advice.
