Hydrostream Ventura setup with lower power
I just picked up a Hydrostream Ventura for my teenage son and looking for some advice on motor/setup. Boat has new core, floor and transom. Thinking anywhere from 90-150hp. What would be better OMC or Merc? Speed wise 70mph plus would be our goal. I have read that the Ventura doesn't like a lot of setback. Boat will be used just for play so looking for all around performance.
Thanks for any info.Last edited by mxz; 04-23-2019 at 07:57 AM.

A 150 Merc V-6 (2 cycle) with the propshaft 1 1/4" below the pad with a Bob's convertible plate set to 2 1/2" will give you 77 mph without need for a low water pickup using a big or small ear 28 Chopper with a light load. Probably will want a second prop for heavier loads.

I just took my 150 Promax off a Vegas and have it listed for sale on s&f.. very reliable and should have no problem seeing 70+mph

Above link is to a Ventura with a "140". Should be a fun little boat.

Transomstand has it 150 -200 merc 2 stroke and have a blast . Have run a Ventura with 115-140 hp Evinrude . And with 150 v-6merc to a 2.5 and you cant go wrong with 150-200 HP .

Either omc or merc will work. A buddy of mine has a omc 200 on his, it runs 90 and the engine has more in it but the boat gets flighty. I had a ventura with a 150 promax that ran 87 with a 26et banging on the rev limiter, the boat would have ran 90 pretty easily with a 30. A 150 with a nose cone will get you into the 70's easily.

Looks like we will probably go with a 2 stroke Mercury 150 of some kind with either a CLE or coned case. Would love to find a Promax 150 up here but they are rare. How about props? Was thinking a chopper or maybe a Laser II in a 24-26" pitch.

150 efi block is identical to the 150 promax other than ecu, solid mounts, and fiber reeds. A small ear chopper runs pretty well on them 26 or 28. SRX or et/et cut props also run pretty well. I ran a yamaha drag on mine and it had some serious punch even with the 150. Would put boat lengths on my dad's xb02 225 promax out of the hole but not a great lake prop.
