Ok, would an ARP 3/8” UNF bolt work (instead of the UNJF thread)?

Smokey used ARP fasteners for everything he built. That says a lot right there.
That tidbit aside there were some off shore ARP knock offs being made that were so close to genuine ARP visually that even ARP could not id the real from fake without testing them. ARP said the only way to be sure your getting the genuine fasteners was to buy directly from them. I’m sure seastar and other reputable outfits are selling genuine parts but I thought it worth a mention here because of the major safety aspect involved. If it’s cheap price and the seller is some online only drop shop or e bae type seller you might want to think twice.

There is a real problem with "Traceability" and many an engine/airframe has had to be disassembled do to Chinese counterfeits being sold into the supply chain. Buy it from someone like Merc who surely polices their supply chain.

Is the correct position of the ARP steering bolt down from the top with the nut on the bottom or up from the bottom with the nut on the top or does in make a difference? Mine on the STV is down from the top with the nut on the bottom as its been since the boat was purchased new and just want to be sure as I am thinking of changing it after 10 years/ 94 hours of operation to be on the safe side.
Apologize for the sideways and upside down photo but I cant rotate the photo once posted or in the posting process. All I can think of its that its a iPhone thing.

Agree, down is best imo. If all goes wrong at least gravity is working for you and not against you
