    Attn. Yamaha gurus

What is the difference between a 1992 225 and a 225 Excel? I know the Excel is way more powerful but why?

ECU, Oil Pump, heavier hood, different part number on the head...but basically the same.

Mine ran 93 on my SRV...

Now I`m told on another web site that the 1992 225`s had compression notches in the exhaust port. This would make since to me on why these motors lack the power that the Excel has. Other than resleeving there`s nothing that can be done about this. I`ve been through it with a 150hp Merc. Ended up resleeving to get rid of them.

The block is the same from 1990 through to 1995. The porting should all be the same. No compression reliefs. The sleeves are ported to the top of the casting. The heads are the same as well so...setup maybe???

The Excel was earlier than 1990. The 220 Special came out in 1984. I think the 225 Excel came out in 1986 or 87. It was definitely around in 1988.

The Excel had tighter heads than later 225s. (But not as tight heads as the 220 Special).

Over time, Yamaha learned that compression is a risky way to make power since many people don’t know what those numbers on the gas pumps mean. So they found other ways.

All 3 versions of the heads are very close. Even the 220's aren't a bunch different. The knock sensor saves the motor from a certain amount of sketchy fuel.

I wouldn't say that yamaha found other ways to make power considering they use the exact same ideas in the 3.1 and 3.3. Raise the ports and add compression...

HydroTec sold a so-called Decomputer Kit so that the presence of knock sensors wouldn’t stop you from burning pistons...

Right...but that customer should have a clue about fuel requirements....and they also cut the stock heads.

If someone wants to blow stuff up its hard to stop them...or you could just buy a merc .

I believe you are correct. I talked to Ray Neudecker extensively about these motors. I had found a Special and was planning on buying it. If I remember right, the Excel had a different front half/reeds cages/intakes???

The 220 Special heads being tighter sounds right also. God I wish I had written that stuff down. Ray was one smart man, RIP.

You are correct about the excel having the horizontal front (reeds , intake to match). Carbs where different as well but the same size. Even more right about Ray. I saved all my PM's from him thank goodness I just wish I asked him more questions lol. He helped a bunch of us and was genuinely a nice guy.

    Ray was great.

The 220 Special had the vertical intake of the 200 hp and below. From what I remember, the 220 Special also had different carburetors. Not Nikkis, as found on the later engines.

The horizontal intake was introduced on the 225 Excel. That was the first step on the journey to make power from other means than compression.
