What most people don't know is brush type electric motors aren't emission free.
In fact the emission they produce makes up a large part of smog. Talk about irony. The emission they produce is ozone and one of the side effects of it is ozone dry rots rubber products fast.
On another note, plug in Ev's make up 1% of vehicle sales in the US. The lowest price one starts at 30K and it's a sub-compact. Yes tech will keep improving, it always does but keep in mind fuel injection was introduced for the first time on a production car, AFAIK, on the Corvette in 1957. It wasn't until the late 80's before they were common place on consumer gasoline powered vehicles.
I agree with JPEROG, I and most likely all the other people over 50 will have passed on before you see a majority of EV's on the road in the U.S.
I've been waiting for camshafts to be replaced by computer controlled actuators on 4 stroke engines since the 90's and it still isn't in mass production. That will be another step in making the normal ICE lower displacement, more fuel efficient with lower emissions and make more power for a given size.
IMO, we will see hybrid in larger numbers before plug in EV.
Look at what Porsche did with hybrid power.

Better unplug your fridge, freezer, electric shaver, air-conditioning, furnace fan.
Starting to sound like a democrat bitching about your Pres in the face of common sense and preservation.

Who, me? Nah, EV's at least the ones produced by large car manufacturers don't use brush type motors so they don't produce ozone. I just thought I'd throw that out there as a bit of funny. I'm not against EV's I just don't see how they are going to become dominant as quickly as people are saying. It's not the way the world works.
Look at my example with fuel injection and cam-less 4 strokes. It is rare that these types of changes happen in a short time. They usually take several decades and I believe the same will be true of plug in EV's.
Take an honest look at what it will take for EV's to be in the majority of personal vehicles on the road. The raw material needed to build them. The new power plants that will have to be built. Public charging stations in sufficient numbers. The fuel sources needed to power the electric power plants. The miles of government red tape to do all of these things I mentioned. The list goes on and on. You are looking at a monumental undertaking.Last edited by CDave; 03-29-2019 at 01:42 PM.

Trade offs with everything. The industries and parts supply is greatly reduced with the simplicity of less moving parts.
New industries in mining and processing and supply, opportunity yes.
Less demand on parts manufacturing in the long run frees up electricity capacity, no gearboxs , housings , etc. A lot has already moved outside the domestic electrical area without this shift.

You'll invest in new nuclear power and more renewables, save the coal for a time in the future.
Massive investments from the OEMs , full e lineups in a couple years.
If you're fortune your distribution transmission companies won't charge you for delivery wether you use any power or not. That happened here with deregulation started by the conservatives. It's not that our kWh pricing is too extreme during certain on peak times but the delivery portion has more than doubled the bottom line price the consumer pays. This was until a few years ago never added as an extra cost , it was just part of the ¢/ kWh.

VOLVO, BMW, VW, Mercedes, Porsche, GM if they ever make their mind up, etc. VW will make it affordable to all. Then don't forget Hyundai and the Japanese, all in line.

Just the purchase price of a decent EV that has good range and can carry a load similar to an SUV will price a lot of people out of them. How m uch are the EV's that can get 400 miles? 60K plus? Prices are going to have to come way down for people in mass to be able to convert from their gassers. They will also have to start making SUV's with 8500# towing capacities for those who want to pull their boats and campers, what do you think a SUV EV like that will cost? Even used ones that would be a direct replacement for what people have now will still be pricey. Just like the Green New Deal, price matters. I'm all for making our enviroment cleaner, but don't see it happening as fast as people think it will. Even if you go all EV's you will add power plants to charge them (as said earlier) and those power plants will still be burning fossil fuels to create that power.

You'll watch it happen, 95% of buyers need it for only light commuting, groceries, work, movies, dinner, kids from school. For what a load or two in the dryer uses.
