I’m interested in this too. I just picked up a project 26 scarab sportster that came with a 250 efi and a tank full of bad gas. The plan is to get it running and if I like it Repower with something better and your 2 choices are the same as mine. The Verado would be sweet but it’s heavy.

Well paramount, I guess nobody wants to talk about this so I’m going to ramble my thoughts about this. I know that our boats are not the same but they have some similarities.
It’s seems that my hull with a good 250 2 stroke should be in the high 40s to maybe 50. I would like it to hit 60+light and have a 40mph economical cruise for long runs. If money were no object I would get in line for a 300r or a 400 Verado. I think theses choices would have the best chance at achieving my goals .
The most affordable new 300 is a Suzuki which can be had for around 20k. The problem with this choice is it is heavy and it’s a Suzuki.
The used choices in the 10-15k price range would be Yamaha 300 or mercury 300xs or a Verado. The Yamaha is heavier and I doubt would hit my speed goals but would be a sweet setup. The Verado is even heavier but there are mods to bring the power up and it’s also smooth and refined.
The 300xs only weighs a little more than the efi I have now and should hit my performance goals. The drawbacks are that it’s still a 2stroke and it requires 91 octane. That octane requirement means that you would have to run ethanol pump fuel and would not be able to buy fuel at a marina. I’m still trying to decide if this would be a deal breaker. My boats don’t sit long enough for the ethanol to usually cause problems but when I run down to cabbage key or anywhere else that would require an on the water fuel stop, 91 octane won’t be available.
I’m not trying to hi jack your thread just trying get a conversation going.

300 xs should run on 87 around here all we can get alcohol free is 91. Interesting
Setups basics are get the engine high as water pressure allows. Prop it to close to max rpm. And set bow stern lift to get propshaft running lvl with water (not height but parallel) and run on whatever final plane surface strake pad step you have.
Not to familer with the boat boat but that will get you started.
