    Mirager Ski Racer setback questions.

I just picked up a 92 Ski Racer that seems to be a heavy layup. I don't know what the weight is but I do know it isn't light. It had the Mercury racing 2.5 EFI on it and I was told it would run 113 to 116. Long story short, after the 2.5 grenaded, the guy hung a 25in 2.4 200 on the back. He never ran it that way and unfortunately passed away since. I want to set it up closer to where it was but just use the 200 powerhead for now. I have a few options for jack plates but don't know which would be best. My options are a 4in, a 6in, or a 12in plate. I have read about these liking 10in or so but the 4in isn't tied together and I'm not fond of stacking a 6 and a 4 to make 10. Is the 6in enough? Is the 12in too much? Where is a good place to begin?

Ok I finally got the the boat rigged and put in the water yesterday. It's got the 12in plate, a 2 hole CLE, and a 29 mazco. I believe the prop shaft is about level with the pad but in the rush of getting it wet I didn't get an accurate measurement. It is far from good though. It is bound and determined to go right and the faster you go the harder it pulls. At 60 it took 2 hands hard left just to go straight and then started hopping like crazy. I tried pushing through it thinking it might free up once it lifted but my wife wasn't having it. Could the motor height cause the pulling problem or do I need to look at something else?

assuming that CLE still has the torque wedge, you need to raise that biotch till you start looseing water pressure, then drop it an 1/8"SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE WAY TO LOW?

It does have the torque wedge on the skeg. I'll give myself a little more time to play with it next time and hopefully make it happy. This may be a dumb question but on the steering arm there are 2 different mounting points. Can you mount the steering to the front hole? I've got it mounted in the one closest to the pivot point. I figured it was safer and steers quicker there but the torque would be less in the front mount. Basically is it strong enough and safe to mount to the end of the steering arm?

Brought the motor up to where the pad was splitting the intake holes by sight. Didn't pull as bad but still wants to go right. Water pressure gauge isn't hooked up yet so I don't know exactly how high I can go. Ran 75 but was only able to get it to spin 5600 or so and couldn't get beyond the "hop".

Over trim it when you are running under 80 and start on the down button as speed continues. I am a big advocate for making the smallest hole in the air possible "flying the boat level" but at slower speeds trim will usually cure the hop.

Thanks Joe. I did try trimming up but probably didn't go high enough. It did feel it was hanging at the top of the hop longer so I think I was almost there but I didn't want to push my luck because I was out by myself. I'll give it another shot when I have someone else to watch.

Do u have hydraulic steering or cable , once u figure out where ur hop zone is , mines usually somewhere between 60 and 70 depending on the load in the boat , don’t cruise thru that zone punch thru it , if I know I’m goin above my hop zone I usually drop well below it and punch it, once I’m thru It i start bumping it down

It's got cable steering now. I want to go hydraulic in the future but I want to get it lined out better while I have some feedback. It helped when I brought it up so my next step is to get the water pressure gauge on it and come up some more. I'll try a little more trim too but need wait until I've got someone watching

I chickened out on bringing the motor up anymore but I did run it with a little more trim. It's set up better going into the wind and I was able to get 6100 rpm out of it but of course I didn't have the GPS turned on. It ran 76 but I was only able to get it up to 5800 or so that pass. I'll get the pressure gauge on it this week and once I get the motor up I'm gonna try 28 cleaver to hopefully free up the motor some
