1992 2.5 / 135 high idle
I have a friend with a 2.5 / 135 that revs to about 3,000 rpm as soon as it's started. Initially I figured it would be a broken cable or linkage was broken or fell off.
1. All cables are intact and move freely.
2. All linkages are in place and the carburetors are closed.
3. No apparent major air leaks.
My only other thought is a broken reed??? HELP! I'm stumped.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Timeing stuff in place.
3000 with carbs closed is pretty wild.
Mite look for intake seals letting air in.
If you got it in gear how much did rpm drop?

Air is getting in there somehow. Obviously it hasn't been like this since new so what has been done since it last ran correctly.

Probably an air leak or trigger is not returning. BTW 92 135hp would be a 2.0L.

Thanks for all the input. Did not see any signs of air leaks and the linkage is all synced from what I can see (it certainly isn't that far crazy out of whack) so I'm going with trigger not returning. I should have thought of that to start with but it was a little startling when he started it and it revved that high in his driveway. I was thinking to myself....."yeah yeah, it may be idling a little high but not 3500 rpms". I'll update when I check that trigger function.

Found the culprit!
Thanks for the input. Upon closer inspection I found that the crank trigger was broken due to broken magnets in the flywheel which didn't kill but did bang up the stator. Lucky for him, I have a parts motor and a Mercury Flywheel Puller. He's back in business!
