Have you done compression test since the time?
Is your timing base moving all the way to the wot stop?
Have you checked wot timing?
Is your throttle cable linkage adjusted correct, moving all the way to the stop?
So Reving to 5500 in neutral..it gets to 3900 and hits a wall? Or does it fluctuate a little
Did you try over trimming it just to see if it would rev higher in gear..not so high you lose water pressure..Last edited by mrichartz; 04-08-2019 at 09:22 AM.

I did a compression test back in November when this all started. All cylinders were at 88-90 psi cold.
Throttle cable is moving all the way.
Yes, hits a wall at 3900 with no fluctuating, acts like it will hold it all day. The motor sounds like it's running mid range and has a lot more to go, if that makes sense. Didn't try trimming it, but I don't think that's the issue.
I have not looked at the timer base too close, had it changed by a shop back in 2012. I will take a look at it this evening.

Have not checked WOT timing. What's the best way to go about that?

Assuming when you did the compression, throttle was wide open and cylinders weren't fogged with storage oil which will raise the psi, 88 psi although seems to be acceptable if it's spec isn't anything great if your leak down is excessive. Hope you find a timing or fuel issue.

You need two people to make it easier..I've done it myself but you have to disconnect the throttle link to move it..
Not really smart to do by your self tho..
Couple ways strap the boat to the trailer REALLY well back the boat into the water enough too get water pressure run it IN gear to make sure it's tied good first..
If you have a smaller pitch prop will make it easier or an old one and cut it like a test prop(have to just be real careful to cut the Same amount off each blade)and yes it works I have two
Mark flywheel with a white paint marker on the 18* btdc mark put timing light on #1 cylinder start it put in gear and
Have to wait about 10 secs to check till the fast start shuts off you can hear it ..make sure it's at operating temp then throttle it till it hits the wot stop and look at flywheel with timing light and see where it is..it should be 18* btdc..
If not turn screw counter clockwise to adv one turn at a time and recheck..
It has to be done in gear or the timing will be off..
Or take it to shop and have them do it..
****Oh one turn is about one degree if timing and yes shut the motor off if your going to turn the screwLast edited by mrichartz; 04-08-2019 at 06:28 PM.

Technically it's supposed to be running at 4500-5500 when you check but this way you can at least see if it's advancing all the way to 18*BTDC
If the timing base wasnt lubed or the timing base plate cleaned well when you put it in it could just be sticking and not moving all the way
Especially when you had the magnets and stator go makes a mess and if not cleaned up really wellLETS GO BRANDON.... LETS GO BRANDON

No way to check wot at idle..
Yes WOT has to be done under a load because those ignitions "pick up " timing under a load..
if you do it out of gear the timing can be off 4*
Just has to be far enough in the water to get water pressure warm it up check for pressure make sure it's tied down well before you trying checking timing.LETS GO BRANDON.... LETS GO BRANDON

I was trying to figure out a way to confirm that the timing is in fact off. Like in the driveway on the hose. Not check the wot timing (yet).
But it sounds like that's not possible because it may only be out of time once the spark advances right? Or if it's out of time at wot is it also out at idle? Sorry for the confusion.
Only reason I ask is, it will be this weekend before I can run it wide open again and it would be nice to know I'm on the right track with the timing.

to test your process, pull the plugs and ground them and just disconnect the throttle cable and hold it at full throttle, then get someone to crank it when you have the timing light set up.
let us know what number you get, it wont be the correct figure but it will indicate if its way offLast edited by powerabout; 04-08-2019 at 09:03 PM.

Better to ask three times then ruin something
No not really a way to check on the hose...
Except.. but this really isn't accurate take plugs out push the throttle all the way up then crank motor over see what timing light shows..should be around 14* btdc
No wot can't be done on the hose or at idle
It can be timed perfect at idle and be out at wot
There are two timing stops, idle is the one on the starter side which you can check idle..but you said it's idling fine 900 out of gear and 600 in gear +-?
The stop on the other side is wot make sure it's hitting that stop
Ok what you could try is warm the motor up then take the rubber cap off wot stop put in gear and take off see if that changes anything BUT don't run it long just a quickLETS GO BRANDON.... LETS GO BRANDON

Ok that sounds easy enough.
Been trying to back track today and determine what I could have done to alter the timing. Would replacing the flywheel do it? The one I am running now is not the original, it is off of the same model though.
I wasn't really pleased with how freely the timer base was moving this evening, seems like it might be sticking, so I am going to dig a little deeper into that as well.
