    5 blade prop comparison

The hd sportmaster seems to run best with very high running heights and 5 blade props. My boat with a 400r was fastest with a [borrowed] max5. I also ran a p5x and Maximus but they were both too small pitch and on the limiter. Anyway, I’m ready to buy a prop and noticing there are actually lots of options:

    Merc max5
    Merc maximus
    Hydromotive p5x
    bblades 5 speed
    Signature SL5
cutting edge series III 5 blade

All the above props are large hub, 15”+, and round ear. The max5 is the most expensive at $2k+. Cutting edge and signature are the cheapest at $650. All the rest are comparable at 12-1600.

Does anyone have experience, opinions, or data comparing these props?

Only 5 I’ve tested was a high 5 and mainly for a whole shot ski boat set up.

I would almost consider regearing earring if you can turn 5 blades on the limiter at 28” or more pitch.

Regearing the hd sportmaster isn’t an option.

You see this thread? Cheaper alternative to the $5000 Mercury CNC propeller

I am also in the market for a set of new 5 blades. I have talked to cutting edge and Auggie is working on a set of 5 blades based off the max5 for me right now that are a different casting from the series III. IMO the stock maxumus is just too much material for the 400r but can be labbed and cut down (bblades can even turn it into a max5) I also talked to Brett at bblades and he is working on making a high rake 5 blade like the max5 out of his 5 speed that will be called the R5 but will not be ready until mid summer.

I have a 32p Hill SL5 i run on my 300r Liberator from time to time. I had a max5 that was lost after a shaft failure. Im still screwing with motor height, but Im sure you have seen what Randy was getting out of The 21 Liberator with the Max5. Recently bought a 15.25x34 Merc cnc cleaver and ran 106 @ 6300 with a ton of water pressure. With the engine at the same height the 32p Hill SL5 ran 92 @ 6400. I was on the limiter easily with the SL5. Interestingly, The SL5 ran the exact same speed of 92 with the motor 3/4" lower. At this engine height my 34p Max5 would only do 96@6300.

Thanks, kingofbeers! To dumb it down for me, can you post the props you tried and what speeds they ran?

    34p Max5 with prop C/L +1 5/8"......96@6300
    32p SL5 with prop C/L +1 5/8"........92@6400(on limiter)

    34p merc cleaver prop C/L +2 1/4"..106@6300
    32p SL5 with prop C/L + 2 1/4".........92@6400(on limiter)

I was on the edge of water pressure limits with the SL5 at +2 1/4". Seems the SL5 has much more stern lift than the Max5.

Still had 35+psi with the Merc cleaver at +2 1/4" so motor can come up more with ghe cleaver, but probably not with the SL5.

Thanks much for sharing your results! I’m guessing you’ll be at 108@6.5% slip if you get it up a bit more, but you’re going to run out of water or bite at some point. Good luck, and nice boat!

Id bet the numbers would be better for the Max5 if I had the motor higher...but its at the bottom of the Delta. Randy pulled some good numbers with the 33p and 34p Max5. He also ran a smokin 112mph with the 34p merc and Hill cleaver.

Ive only got one run on the Merc cleaver so there is sure some room for improvement. Ive got Auggie at Cutting Edge building me a 15.5x34 cleaver to see how it runs.

ID:	432882My 15.25 23” max5 style props from cutting edge are out of the mold. I don’t know if he wants me giving out prices before he sets them but what I’m paying is crazy low.

And because I have a prop purchasing problem, I requested a 32,33 or 34P 5 blade series III from Auggie at Cutting Edge. Hes building me a 15.5x34p cleaver already. Its getting ready to hatch...Click image for larger version.
