Hi guys i just got a boat with a 250 refi merc, im not sure if this is the right place to post it, but im wondering what motor is better opti or efi and what are the differences? Also what would be some general maintenance on this motor? its on a activator.

both good motor however the EFI is thirsty and the opti will get almost triple the gas milage. Less stuff to go wrong in the EFI. JMO

What are future plans, the opti is an as is engine theirs a few mods, but nothing like the efi mods available.

Opti tend to last (here anyway) longer then the efi. If taken care of

    modified efi though are stout.

A properly set up opti has a big bottom end and some people like that over the efi.

The 250 efi makes great power and last forever due to the fact that they typically run rich, therefore they stay well lubricated and run cool. Downside is fuel consumption- like vnemous said, but fuel is easier to add to the tank then pistons and air pumps are if an optimax acts up. My recommendation would be to pull the gearcase off (have it pressure checked for leaks, check the gear lash, change the impeller, and change the fluid). Send the injectors off to be cleaned and flowed, flush the VST and replace all of your fuel system filters. Make sure the tank is drained and flush it the best that you can so you don't pollute what you just cleaned.

You also have options to make additional power with your current motor. Todd D. (here on the board) has built some that run very well. I would contact him for the recipe if you are interested in some more squeeze.

Yes both have fuel injectors, the opti also has air injectors and a fuel rail with diaphragms that sometime need servicing if a run problem. The EFI can last 1000+ hours before rebuild if taken care of. I have 1300 hours on a 250 that still shows cross hatch in the cylinders. The opti had a couple problems with fuel injectors, rails and compressors but were all service bulletins that should have been taken care of. Its something to check.

are the fuel injectors located in the throttle body? is that a big project to take apart?

Depends what motor you talking about. EFI they are in the plenum. On the Opti they are on the heads of the motor on the fuel rails. Opti's are easier to get to than the EFI but neither is a big job.

i have an efi, so that would involve taking the throttle body off and the rail sits in there correct?
