    hearing loss

Sure there must be a few of us on here with hearing loss, considering our mutual hobby. Whats your experience with today's hearing aids? Mine is not so good. Bought what are supposed to be top line units, but as far as I can tell, all they do is amplify across the frequency spectrum. Do not seem to be at all selective as I was led to believe.

My wife's hearing aids were set up by a doctor after he tested her hearing. At least theoretically, he hooked them up to a computer and program them to match where she needed the help. They weren't cheap, but seem to be doing the trick and also helping her with her tinnitus
    Per Rock:

"Once I bought my first Hydrostream boating changed forever for me."

    Per my hero Instigator:

"I try not to let common sense interfere w/my boat buying decisions."

I can hear pretty well considering my tinnitus. Tinnitus sucks bad!!! I use a fan to help me sleep. A white noise generator will help too.

    I’m on my second set.

First set were high dollar Miracle Ear that I hated.

Current versions are from Costco, 1/4 the cost and love them.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Had mine set up by the doctor - audiologist- according to the test results also. They have a white noise generator included and they "talk" to each other to make minute adjustments in response to the ambient noise around them. However, when someone is speaking in low volume or a higher pitch, and another person speaks in a higher volume or deeper pitch, it's like someone shouting. Guess it's back to for another program. Or a visit to costco. Instigator: What was the difference between them that you experienced?

I've had Widex Passion 440 for years. They are working great and I just had them adjusted for slight changes in hearing. I would buy them again.

Mine are Zerena 9 mini Rites
Approx $1400 per pair w/a 3 yr warranty.

Had them for just over a yr now.
One was replaced due to sweat corroding the battery contacts.

    This one boggles my mind.
Misplaced one (take them out when in shop and forget them) and the wife found it a week later in a jeans pocket.
After it had been through the wash and dryer and the damn thing still works perfect!

My main hearing issues are twofold. One was understanding people that don’t annunciate their words properly. Particularly tough watching TV.
I could turn the volume all the way up so I could hear them but had to turn the captions on to understand what they were saying.
Second issue is background noise which is the most common hearing issue for us with loss.
    Both are now 100% corrected!

Mine are Bluetooth capable and the guy at Cosco loaded an app on my phone so I can change between three different programs.
One of which is for hearing in loud noise environments.
    As in bar/restaurant.
The wife and I will walk into a restaurant that’s loud that I can’t hear in and we sit down I fire up my phone and set it too loud settings and it changes by 95% and I can carry-on and conversation with her at a normal volume.

Can also listen to radio/tv through them.
I listen to Rush Linbaugh through them everyday.
That way your not bothering anyone else and they can’t trll.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Call and set up an appointment at Costco to get the hearing test. Order. Come back in a week or two have them set them up. Accidentally showered with them in a couple of times... Then on a trip to the Galapagos islands rolled off the dive boat into the salt water, heard them both instantly screaming. Got back into boat and rinsed them.. crossed my fingers. No harm no foul. Wish I got the Bluetooth.

Open headers, outboards on the muffs, shooting guns, sanders, grinders, impact guns, chainsaws, backpack blowers, car stereos, too many rock and heavy meal concerts. Tinnitus just started bugging me noticeably about 3 months ago. Guess I'm lucky it took until recently to notice.
Used to only get it when I was really pissed off!
Pretty aggravating to say the least.
Ease of symptoms...... Avoid caffeine..... Can't live without coffee.
    Avoid stress.... Really?
    Anti-Depressant meds (kooky pills)......No F-ing way!!!
Guess I'll be living with it.
Hearing protection for me from now on, just like sun protection. This crap better not get any worse.
    Thanks for sharing!

this strikes a nerve..I'm on my third high end set now...Starkeys,Unitrons,now Phonaks....have not been happy with any of them yet..close to 20 grand spent in last 6-7 years on hearing loss ...the worse your hearing , the more problems you have with h/aids..the more gain you need to replace your loss, the more feedback and distortion you experience...I have bad genetics...grandparents,parents,most of my sibs all wear h/aids...highly abusive environments as mentioned above...no ear protection..about 90 db of loss across the board for me...so , basically stone deaf without them..had tinnitus as long as I can remember...diagnosing by ear is a thing of the past...same thing with communicating with customers about their motor problems ...main reason I quit working on outboards after a couple decades....
my newest audiologist thinks it's time to see if I'm a candidate for cochlear implants...pretty invasive surgery and 50 -100 grand per ear..
Good luck with yours...stay on your audiologist to get them tuned right...protect what you have left...once it goes it don't come back...

This sounds good to me. Will they work without the phone? Just for hearing that is. I don't use iPhone's, and my quick search didn't show any android pairing capabilities...

Each aid has a button on it.
On mine, the rt one is up volume, left is down volume.
W/o the blue tooth I think the buttons change programs.

To me, the noisy environment program is a game changer.
I was leaving my phone in the car when out w/the Mrs but now I take it in so I can change to that program.

W/the blue tooth feature, you are also able to change volume independent for each ear.

Boatmanblues, my Miracle Ears were $5k and I was back for adjustments constantly.
Even after adjustments, they still sucked in loud environments. After moving (different office) I found out later that they were an older version that the new office didnt understand?? I got screwed??
Found this out after my dog ate one of them so I bought what I thought was an identical one on e-bay for $140.
It worked much better but those idiots wouldnt work on it because I didnt buy it from them.
    They all do this.

My Costco experience was exact opposite.
They offer a free hearing test and then recommend their model and adjust it to you.
They then send you out in the store w/them.
    Where its noisy

When they set the trial set for me I walked into the food court and for the first time in my life I was actually able to eavesdrop!!

    Dude, its free, no strings.
If your hearing loss is that severe, what have you lost?

Truly was a life changing gig for me.

    Nothings perfect, especially Me!

This is how mine are, I don't have the Bluetooth option.

Was out to dinner with friends last night. Bill has both implants and hearing aids and still has to read lips.

Well, in my case and likely many more here that worked in an extra loud environment, with hobbies and interest much like was mentioned in post 10 by Rochelle Howell "Open headers, outboards on the muffs, shooting guns, sanders, grinders, impact guns, chainsaws, backpack blowers, car stereos, too many rock and heavy meal concerts."

This was me to the T.
Nobody's fault but mine. My wife is only a couple years younger and worked in hospitals as a nurse....her hearing is as good as it gets.

Actually the tinnitus I have gotten used to, it's just always there. The hearing impairment is really only frustrating when out in public places.

Sometimes it's to my advantage Not to hear things....
