    Bertram yacht

I believe Bertram was owned by the Ferretti group up until 2015 and then was acquired by the Gavio got group around that time. They acquired a facility from what I can find out in Tampa in 2016 and I’ve been building their yachts over there. I believe they are going to build a new facility near the port of Tampa to expand their production. I think more information can be obtained from the Tampa chamber of commerce.

You can go to the US patent web site and look it up by the number on it. 4672905 all 7 pages of it.

Patents are interesting. My name is on a few, none that ever made it to production. I was involved in a big patent dispute once and successfully fought off an attempt by company X to charge my then employer royalties. Ironically, I had worked for company X before, and wound up working for X again. It's business, not personal.

From my engineering days, I often thought that patents were given out too easily for stuff that wasn't that novel. I also found that it was often relatively easy to work around patents. A patent must be incredibly broad to be enforceable.

I kind of wonder about the Hydrostream XT patent. I don't think it was the first needle nose V bottom with training wheels, and that's not what is claimed. A detailed design comparison with some of the competitors would be fascinating.

The world of patents is indeed a tricky one. A patent is only as good as your willingness to defend it. Roark Summerford didn't publish alot of his excellent hull design ideas/features. Darris Allison and Howard Pipkorn did more publishing of their new ideas.

In my new book, i have a secion dedicated to 'Mod VP boat' designs and development, including patents of some works, such as Allison and Pipkorn designs.
