Welp, so far good, and mission seems to be accomplished. Cust took it the river this weekend, while he had it idling at the landing, he had three different people come over and ask him what all he had done to it. He said it sounds sweet. Fuel reading from plugs is safe and good at 4K. He said the initial take off from idle is a little sluggish, but about 1/2 way through take off when it hits close to 3k it slingshots out the hole and accelerates unbelievably better than before. Says it’s feels super free and very responsive to the throttle. He put 4 more hours on it and is loving it! Told me there’s no comparison in the acceleration of now compared to the way it was, he’s very satisfied with the results. Now if I can just keep him from getting too antsy and finish break in.

Right now thinking after break in may take a few more off sealing surface of head to improve squish and bump up compression a tad more. It’s currently at 130 psi. He ran it some more today and said it feels like getting stronger. It’s actually still on rich side I’m the 4K range, so that’s good. I told him we may tighten heads up some after break in is complete, he acted like he’s fine with the way it is, he’s still all giggly with mid range acceleration, said it feels like it just wants to go.

He’s loving the way it sounds, said it’s not too loud, but has a deep tone and is loud enough to know something aint right with it. Got a pick of the lower section of liner to get an idea where we cut it. On the mid itself, we didnt do any visible exterior mods. On the inside there is a channel running along the back end that feeds the above water relief in cowl and had a 3/8 square hole in bottom to allow exhaust to go to the relief above lower (mainly to drain water). We cut out the bottom of the channel to allow as much exhaust as the factory grilled relief can flow to flow out of it. And also with the liner and channel cut, it allows more exhaust to flow out factory above water relief.

Thanks, and thanks for all the help Chaz! I’m just hopin you wrote all the dimensions down so we can tweak em on the next one. I gotta feeling this ain’t the last one we doing. Everyone that ask him about it he just tells em, “go see Forbes”. I’m a thinkin ya hit it purdy close. The 130 readin was just before I released it to him, and prob will come up a tad after break in. Thinkin just cut the squish band a little shallower and prob be real close to perfect. For two knuckle heads that ain’t never done one of these, think it came out pretty good. After talking to him yesterday, he’s got it over propped because he said stock motor could only turn it 5200, and this one feels like it should blow by 5200. Either way, we need to loosen the prop up so it can spin a little and take the strain off it, and that’ll also fix that brief low rpm softness.

That's why I didn't mind investing a little time and money in building reliable tooling to do those heads. They are odd enough that not everyone can do them. Only oddballs ..

These motors have a compression notch, I know on the early 3.0L it's worth 10 lbs cranking comp. on a gauge. They say it doesn't have time to affect them @ 6000 rpm. Run it a while , let's see how it does ..

Oh, I ain’t in no hurry to pull heads jus yet, especially as tickled about it as he is. You know, I forgot all about it having compression notches, my ole absent minded self had to go back and look at pics. We got these things closer than I thought then. That’s why I got me a little book with all my notes in it, after about 24 hrs, I seem to forgot about 1/2 what I done

    40 to 400 we ain't prejudice ...

I've got a low profile 30* angle fixture we made from some big azz drops off of a beam replacement job we did a while back. It's kind-a overkill, but when I lock everything down it will provide a stable base to dead-center drill broken head bolts or deck a block. I would imagine a lighter version would work just as well in a drill press. Nuttin special But , I'll get a picture of it today ..

On the 150 opti tried welding nuts to studs to remove, didn’t hold enough to get em out. Drilled a pilot hole through studs to allow expansion of bolt to go right direction when heated. Using mig, started welding in hole and gradually came out and welded to nut and they came right out.Click image for larger version.

Heads on the Merc 225 3.0l came out great thanks again to Chaz. Cust only seeking more ump out the hole, wanted it quiet, and economic. So, all we done to it was reshape the ex. Ports to a trapezoid shape widening it at the bottom for a little Mo flo. Got ccms reeds and stuffers. Tightened heads. Went from struggling to get up with a 27 tempest to literally jumping out the hole barely even raising the bow. BTW had a burnt hole that narrowed down to be a bad check valve on vst tank where oil injection injects oil. It was causing fuel to enter oil tank on motor and dilute mixture.
