Magnum (M1) Gearcase propshaft seal Question
Just got a (new to me) 2004 Evinrude Magnum gearcase from Tinbanger1979. Beautiful gearcase too.
But since I haven't installed yet, (and its going to live on a boatlift,) I thought I'd have the propshaft and top driveshaft seal renewed before installing it on my motor.
I spoke with a shop tech at my local Evinrude dealer, and he said he may have to pull the bearing carrier out, to change the propshaft seal.
I have never heard of this before, why would he have to take out the bearing carrier to change the seal?
Would this be necessary to change the top (driveshaft) seal?
I just want to button up this gearcase with fresh seals so I don'y have to worry about it water intrusion
You thoughts, anyone?

The seal can be removed with propshaft still in place but not the best way to do it, if you want it resealed have him pull the bearing carrier which isn’t a big deal put a new seal and a new big o-ring on the carrier and replace the driveshaft seal then you know you are good to go after a pressure test. Just my 2 cents.

agreed.there only 3 real seals.upper, lower and the o-ring. pull it out.swap em all out.. you could do the 2 and find out your o-ring is bad..
