Do not leave the boat's transom unsupported. Trailer bunks should always extend beyond the transom's vertical edge so as to prevent hull deformity (hook). The concentration of outboard weight is directly carried by the vertical transom surface - it needs to be supported.

I've seen several hulls ruined by short bunks where time and weight cause the droop to become a permanent hook.

And some (me) use a transom saver to support motor weight on the transom ANY time the boat ain't floating, especially rolling down the road on the trailer.
