Help with Merc midsection parts
Guys,
I got this from a guy and want to see what parts are missing. I have an '88 200 power head from a different lower and another powerhead that might have been the original mate to this midsection but no way to tell. The silver plug on top is not there. It has horizontal intake slots and no carbs or reed plate. Here are some pics, I like to know where to find a diagram so I could see what's missing, looks like to me some power trim parts and shift lever it I have no idea what part numbers to look for or what years parts are interchangeable. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the site. You have an antique there. The adapter is the old 175 piece and it looks like the old bolt pattern on the heads. Looks like hoses are missing plus you will need a pump mounted in the boat.

No sparkling wiggles in here, only dump truck grinches.

It is part Frankenmerk, maybe. The clamp is early 1976-82 The can is early formula 2.4 off shore .The two piece plate is early two liter 1750. It's possible that you have an early 2.4 that was modded and the chest was opened up for the 1750 plate that was a common practice in the early eighties.Look at the heads, somewhere on top they will have ether 3 1/8 or 3 3/8.Indicating bore size.

The offshore 20'' midsection was first available loose and on the first 2.4 offshore motors around 1978. But they were not labeled "Offshore" motors quite yet. They were simply still labeled as "Formula 2.4" motors. From your photos, this looks to be a early 175 powerhead, non-Hi-Performance...as it is painted black, which performance powerheads were not. Freshwater, as it is so clean. Low(er) hours. Standard midsection mounts. Of course, through-the-clamp-bracket lower mounting bolt hydraulic fitting(s). (I think I still have some brand-new ones-u don't want them) Please fill us in, with more details, such as history, location, past owners, boat it was on, what lower-unit, etc.

Guys,
Thanks for the welcome, glad to find this forum and I hope to share some pics in the coming months with you guys as my project comes along. I value your input and advise.
I got the motor from a mechanic I met while I was out trying to find a midsection and lower unit for my '88 200 powerhead. I was looking for a project boat and trying to find parts to complete a 200 power head that has been sitting in my Dads shop for the last 25 yrs. The mechanic said he had a midsection that would really wake up the old 200 I have. There was no lower unit only the powerhead you see in the pictures, cowling and boat that it was on 15 years ago.
The boat it was on is a '79 speedliner by sea jay, bass boat deck - He said the boat was very fast but motor was to much stress on the transom and after running it for a while he decided to rebuild the transom. That's where he stopped 15 years ago. He used some of the parts off the motor over the years. Missing Stator, carbs and reed block, voltage regulator and one switch box. He said the motor was a 2.4 although I don't know what to believe. I suppose it could be a 175 but from what I've read here I thought the 175's all have the vertical reed blocks...
So my plan - The transom is rebuilt and strong enough now to handle the motor, I'm rebuilding the boat with a sport deck, at least that's the plan. My dad raced a boat called a Kober Kat back in the 60's, a boat built by Dave Kober who lived down the street from my parents, when I was a kid I thought it was the coolest looking boat ever, like speed racers Mach 5 on water. It had a flat deck and a small pickle fork. Any how that serves as inspiration for this little project, have to come up with some deck ideas after I get the motor back together.
In the search for a lower unit I came across an 86 or 87 model 175 black max and got the whole motor with 2 SS props for 300 bucks. blown powerhead and all the electronics and cowls. Only thing is that its a 2:1 lower unit. Should I be looking for a higher geared foot. I'd like to use the electronics off the 175 for this project motor in the pictures if they will work?Last edited by Tjets; 02-18-2019 at 12:25 PM.
