not necessarily, it all depends on horsepower and power curve.

I have 2 gearcase. 1.75 I know for sure and the hole shot is great.. bought a back up case and the hole shot is allot worse. Just not sure what gear it is

mark the drive shaft in relation to a mark on the water pump ot gearcase, put it in gear, roll the driveshaft around until the propshaft makes a full rotation and estimate the percentage it stopped..... you can use a degree wheel for accuracy. The difference between 1.75 and 1.62 is noticeable tho.

This case is off a 2001 Merc 225. I sent it to Bob's and then installed it.

If the lower is bolted to the mid, mark the prop to the case with a marker , mark and turn the flywheel until the prop mark does a complete rotation and lines up. Notice the flywheel rotation : 1 prop rotation.
