    Evinrude 85 problems

I have a 1975 85hp motor that I’ve been trying to get started so far I got fresh spark plugs and all 4 coils for it but I ran into a few issues I started off buying the wrong spark plugs and they all got smashed by the pistons idiot move on my part for not double checking the spark plug type and going off of what I found in the boat. I did a bit of research and found the right spark plug numbers. The pistons looked ok but I’m no professional in mechanical. I found the choke solenoid missing and motor will not fire with any amount of starter fluid I think the starter might be getting tired or something since it has no spark starter may not be cranking fast enough. I want to know where I should look next maybe I’ll post a video to give you guys a better idea. If it’s not looking to good for this motor my prediction foretells a nice mercury motor will take its place. I want to give this motor a chance before that happens

Check for spark first, power packs in that era failed frequently. Also stator could be shot. Disconnect black/yellow wire from power pack to eliminate key switch, wiring harness.

I already undid the black and yellow wire and same results no start starter I think may be getting tired but not sure what else to do at this point. Thx for responding

Well, if it were me I would investigate the piston chambers for debris, from the plugs being banged up "Smashed" and tossed around inside each one... before moving forward on the "Crank but no spark issue"
Use an Endoscope to look inside and around each cylinder for particles, signs of scrapes, top piston damage ect

When I last looked the pistons had a small ding from that rookie mistake I’ll see if I can get my hands on an endoscope if it’s not to expensive

First check for spark while cranking with the spark plugs removed (increased cranking RPM). Second check for spark with the spark plugs installed (reduced cranking RPM). If you have spark with the plugs removed but no spark with the plugs installed try reducing the air gap of the two sensors on the timer base. You can generally loosen the two screws on each sensor and shove the sensor up to the stop on the timer base. Sometimes this is to tight and it will drag on the hub of the flywheel and you have to back them off a hair.

I did some light bulb testing today and found that the stator was producing power and each of the coils were getting power to the point where my helper was shocked holding one of the wires with the bulb tester in hand. We tested the motor with and without plugs as said. we took apart the fuel filter to see if it was getting fuel and I got a look at the sensor and they were pretty crusty.

You need to test for actual spark, not just getting zapped..... you can get zapped with 100 volts but to jump a spark gap, you'll need 50 times that.... get an air gap spark checker and set it to 3/8" - 7/16" inch and see if you actually have a good spark

For now I will be doing a volt test on the stator output and I want to retest the power pack. I also plan to take apart the carbs and fuel filter

If new to you I would throw a compression test in as well.

Are the plug wet wet after you tried cranking?

    new gas?

it should jump the gap hand cranked with the pull rope.

Being older wiggle all the wires may may be some connections lose or crusty.
