    Outboard opions

I picked up a 1978 johnson seahorse 55 2 cylinder engine. The motor was found in a fresh water area and had 50 hours maybe bs but it is clean. No tilt no rust no salt I need to find a prop but it is clean sitting 5 years it started right up. Back up for my salt packed v4. Any opinions on this motor thinking a 13 ft whaler or whaler splash. Thanks Rick

Hey Rick, they are good little motors. I had a 1979 55HP on a 14' McKee Craft, and it flew. Those 2 cylinders have a "shakier" idle than a comparable 4 cylinder Merc, but smooth once they rev up. Like yours mine did not have power trim, it made moving people around on the boat to get it planed off so it would fly right. I think I have a left over prop in my garage I can send you. I'll check when I get home tomorrow.

Rick, that motor belongs on an old 13' Critchfield, Checkmate, Allison or Allison pop, but I guess that Whaler would be way more practical. Buck up the transom.

I had a 50 Johnson, like yours on a 13 Whaler. You NEED power trimand tilt with that engine on that boat, or its a waste of time.

Chose you windy days carefully, because too much wind it will beat you senseless in an oncoming chop.

On the other hand, of the conditions are right, you can stuff enough air under the sponsons, and she will get up and literally fly!

I loved that rig, but my lower back made me sell it.
