Newbie questions 1700 vs 1708
Hey guys, moving along with my Viking rebuild and reaching the point where I'm ready to start laying down some high strength cloth. I bought what I thought was 1708. When I unwrapped the roll I found it to be what I believe is 1700. It is a woven 45/45 cloth but does not have any chop/mat on one side Will this work for wrapping my wood transom before install, using it to install transom, as well as above my core once the core is bedded? Also to be used for installing stringers etc.?
I am using GP polyester resin.
I have done some research and from what I can find its saying that I should have the chop/mat stitched on the woven cloth to help with adhesion when using polyester. Is that needed? Should I go back and pick up some true 1708?
Also, is 1700/1708 good for a final layer of glass, or should I cover it with a layer of CSM?
Thanks!

1700 is intended for use with epoxy,it can be used successfully with poly but best over new underlayment. And may not hold as well over old sanded glass. 1708 is best used with vinal or poly, but can also be used with epoxy, problem is the Matt has a binder that is dissolved by the poly, and let's the Matt relax so it will conform to bends.

1708 is only 1700 with .75 chop strand stitched on it. If your using poly you can just put a 3/4 oz mat between layers. It just helps bond the cloths together. Mat sticks better.

I've always sandwiched the roving (1700) between the mat (I always use 1 1/2 oz mat), was under the impression that the mat gives the roving a good bond and a good smoother finish on top. Maybe I read your post wrong...if I did...sorry.

Ok, thanks guys. I figured that leaving the 1700 as the final layer wasn't right. Seemed too rough. I'll add some mat over that patch.
As far as wrapping my transom and stringers and such I won't have enough mat to lay up with the 1700 and the rolls I have are different sizes. So its back to the store I go either way. I suppose I'll just get the 1708. I'll find something to do with the roll of 1700 that's in the garage.
