Noobie here w/ 1250BP -- need lower unit
Hello, ScreamandFly world!
My name is Brian, and this is my first post! My son Zack and I replied to a Craigslist post for a boat and motor for his little fishing boat. We were only interested in the motor and the guy said "come take a look". It was left way out in a field behind an old farm here in Colorado just left to die. Filled with mouse poop and nesting, wires eaten through. The date on the trailer license plate was 1990. We had some distant pictures of it but when we walked up to it, it had a 1250BP (or is it 1250 BP?) sticker on it. It does have the Typhoon motor, has even compression and has great spark. We are sure the reason it was parked was because of the broken lower unit.
Some issues we have with it is that we found the lower unit casting is busted. Can someone help me identify what lower we have and where to find parts for it or someone who might have a good replacement for a cheap/decent price? Just identifying it would be great. We really want to revive this old motor. My son was so escatic that it is called the Tower Of Power! He wants to buy the shirt of the Racing Super BP if/when we get this thing up and fully running.
The serial number is 17762243 but I cannot find any information about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction and get me more info about it? The serial number (if its a serial number) we found is stamped above the distributor. There is no serial number plate on the transom left or right side. There is no other riveted plate that we can find either. Best we could find was on oldmercs.com website was Keikhaefer Mercury Outboard Serial number listing is that its a 1968 (any serial number up to 2641954).
Any help will be greatly appreciated,

It is a 1969 Super BP(you can tell by the starter mounts). The mid section is a Super BP with a lower unit adapter on it and it appears to be a stock inline lower unit bolted to it. With this adapter you can run a super speedmaster lower unit also.

Are there any other ways to confirm that it is a super bp? Like what other differences can we look for?
Also I don 't remember what boat it was on, I'll see if i can find the pictures and find out.

I take back what I said. I didn't notice the picture with the intake transfer ports. They are standard not super bp. Could be 125 on super mid

Here is a side picture of a 69 super BP. You can see the transfer port covers are quite different. The 1968 and 1969 production 125 had ports like yours. The 1968 125 bp was just a standard 125 on a racing mid section. You definitely have a 1969 Super BP mid section which is a very nice find. You With your adapter you have the option to bolt up several different lower unit. With the 1968 BP mid you have but 1 choice which is a 1968 non Super BP lower. I just sold a whole bunch of Super and non Super lower units. They re not what you want if you are going to run this motor. They are super complex and no one will work on them.

Yes, I guess we could. It has three carbs which we do need some random parts for: Manual coke cable, choke plate and linkage for one carb and ignition wires. Where is a good place to get things like that? It has one in guessing main pump than another to lift the fuel to the upper carb. Then fuel lines down to the lower carb through the middle carb. And a line from the first pump to the lower carb, so the lines form a complete loop. Is that just to make sure to not starve the engine under full load/speed?

Krazymaan,
I appreciate the info. But That website isn't valid. Any idea if it changed or could be emerged incorrectly?

17762243 resolves to a standard (non-BP)1965 100hp powerhead. Without the original 1969 powerhead and a functioning lower unit, its not that valuable or really worthy of hunting down the $2000+ BP lower unit that does not have a reputation for reliability. Dave is right, a stock shifter case is the best thing.
as is, the desireable parts you have are the louvered cowl and the driveshaft tower and adapter. You will have a lot of people trying to buy them from you, even if you want to keep them.

Best place for new spark plug wires https://www.oldmercs.com/product_p/84-63212a2.htm The wires are SPECIAL and screw into the distributor cap. DO NOT PULL OR CUT them.
Dave probably has good used ones and the carb and choke linkage you need and possibly a replacement lower unit like the one that is busted.
