Ok. I saw the hole in it but didn't think it went anywhere. So by leaving the skags on does it affect the way handles? I had a guy tell me those have to be adjusted perfect or it can make the boat drive weird. Idk. Other then a water pick up they seem pointless

I understood that this could be offset to counter act crabbing of the gear case.

Yea leave that on your motor. It directs extra water, into gearcase bullet, to help cool brg. carrier & prop. hub. It should actually help you go faster, if adjusted correct. counteracts torque of prop. to force gearcase to go straighter thru water. If you have excess torque, on steering, from jacked up motor. Try a torque tab. they work excellent.

Took mine off years ago when I put on an Allison planing wing. Never had any problems.

I took mine off my V8 to put a planing plate on before going to the Rondack Romp one year. I melted a rubber hub in my prop on a good run. I took plate off when I got home and put tab back on and never had an issue again. I can't say it as 100% because of the tab or if it was a freak thing. Just my experience but I do know a lot of people removed them with no issues but probably ran a solid hub prop.

Ok well Thanks. I guess for now I'll buy new ones and have them adjusted. Not really sure what the perfect adjustments is supposed to be on them but hopefully figure it out. I blow lower gear cases alot as it is so I dont need them getting hotter from removing that pick-up. Damn old school **** haha

If you are running the motor high like most of us the tab won't be in the water anyhow at high speed.

If the gearcase is buried up to the cav plate then they can be adjusted for neutral torque. If you are even close to surfacing they are useless. I just cut off the fin and run the bare plate.

Ok well this helps then because my set up is high and I was assuming at high speeds they weren't in the water but I wasn't sure. Plus with the props spinning out it creates transom lift as well so I pretty sure my props are surfacing more then not. By the way this set up is on a 27ft CAT so ya she packs air haha
