Painting over a new finish (gearcase)
I have an SEI lower unit that is painted black, its brand new, but I want to paint it white.
Now don't laugh, but I want to paint it with a OEM outboard paint rattle cans.
What should I do to the surface to prepare it?
Have any of you guys attempted this?
Some guidance and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I would probably scuff it with 400. If you break through to bare metal anywhere prime with zinc chromate primer. I like to put the rattle cans in a sink of hot water just prior to spraying. Helps the paint flow. Preheat the lower also. A heat gun works well for this. Hot isn't necessary, just warm. Thin coats, don't try to get coverage with the first coat or even the second. Just fog it on lightly.
I would run it some first before painting, the SEI lowers tend to be either ok or just junk. Make sure it survives 5 or 10 hours of running before wasting effort on paint. You may want to contact SEI and make sure painting won't effect the warranty...Josh Peterson

A little patience would help, as double post less than 1/2 hour apart?
