Welcome to the site. Rods probably don't matter but I put them in numbers up also. Add at least .001 to .0015 extra to those Wiseco. Good luck.

Just to stay uniform I build ALL my motors with rod numbers up .Just a habit ,not nessary but just as simple to put everything uniform , I’m anal about things Like that..
BTW I choose NOT run forged pistons in any steel sleeved blocks I build , I like cast pistons going back in a steel bored motors (Like your OEM motor came) been building these for 20+ years doing these seems for ever I’ve learned many lessons most the HARD way , but that’s one lesson I’ve learned , with cast on steel you have a 100% chance of success, forged on steel is IMO a crap shoot , also on a 2.5 sized bore you must add .003” to use forged pistons on the steel sleeve bore size ...

I wouldn't run Wisecos in that build. I would order some cast from WSM or Pro Marine. I'd run the block, tuner, and carbs from the XR2, the crank, rods, and other parts from the '79 will work fine. I would set up the electrics like the '79 was but use the stator from the XR2 or the 86 if you have it. The 79 was 9 amp and the later motors are 16 amp. If you don't have the adapter plate from the XR2 use the 86 plate (79 won't work) and get a 2.4 200 or a Bob's exhaust tuner. The XR2 carbs should be WH-29's. The other motors you have will probably have small bore carbs. Maybe make a list of the parts you're planning to use...

I’ve had great luck with the mid grade Pro Marine cast pistons in steel sleeved engines , I am setting up an account with the WSM folks as I type , never used their parts but friends have had good luck with them .
Only time will tell ,

I used Wisecos in many v4 and v6 OMCs. As stated, 2-3 thousandths extra clearance and I would tie them to the dock and let them idle in gear for 45-60 minutes before running them. Didn't have any failures using this method, but I stuck a couple treating them like cast pistons on break-in.
