Less than two decades ago Robinson Helicopter (in California) approached Rolls Royce, about a turbine engine. R.H. wanted a small turbine, with about 300 horsepower at the output shaft.

We (I was a R.H. employee then) received the turbine engine in late 2008. So, anyone wanting to mate a gas turbine on a boat outdrive, then I suggest the Robinson R66 engine as a proven reliable (and lightweight) candidate
    .

Surely, it helps power a ship.

Nobody else would want that amount of weight.

    That's badass

If anything screams louder for the need for a gas turbine, (lots of power, light weight), it's a helicopter. Being from SoCal, (after Australia), and learning my trade flying piston planes there before I got to the airlines, I watched Robinson from early on. My biggest misgiving about them from the time they came out is the piston engines. I don't fault them though. The whole point of Robinson helicopters is to get more people into them than could otherwise afford a turbine helo. Something they succeeded at beyond all expectation.
