300 Promax rev limiter?
Looking for some advice on the rev limiter on a 300 promax. I've heard red line is about 6100 or 6200 rpm, correct? Also heard the limiter mechanism isn't driven by ignition, but by drastically richening the fuel mix. Is that correct? It drinks gas already so not keen on running at or close to red line and burning double fuel. Can anybody comment on whether or not it's obvious when the fuel mix richens? Can you feel it? I've only run it a couple times and had a 32 with 1.75 gear and never got above about 5800 rpm. Learned I needed to install a different shifter (locking) and went ahead and switched to 1.62 gear. Planning to do some prop testing next weekend between a 28 and 30 with 1.62 gear and hoping the 28 works out well but think it may pull to red line pretty easy with the 28.
Just trying to figure out if it should be obvious when the motor limits rpm.
Thanks for any advice.

The Promax has a soft limiter, as you suggest it starts laying down around 6100/6200.
If you put a short prop on it and slam the throttle down, when it hits 6400 it has a hard limiter that feels like somebody turned the ign. off.
As it reaches 6000ish it turns the ign. back on. On a single engine boat, motor jacked up, going way too fast it could make a fairly quick right turn. It opens your eyes big enough that you pull the throttle back to -0- making it feel worse than it is.
The design is to keep the rods in the motor when you go skipping off of waves and aren't quick enough on the throttle.
p.s. There is a warning horn for over-rev ... if its working and hooked up. Typically it's under the dash tied to the wring harness somewhere.
Your head is usually above the dash and with the wind noise you can't hear it.Wriggleys gum makes me think of boating, "Double your engines, Double your fun"

Thanks for the warning about 6400 hard limit. Based on how it ran with the 32 and 1.75, I dont think it will blow past 6100 or 2 very easily with 28 and 1.62. But I'll make sure to watch for that.
Do you know if the horn sounds at the soft or hard limiter?

Soft limit comes in at 6100, dials back timing 2% at a time till motor is at 6000.
Hard limit is at 6400, cuts timing to 20% atdc. It turns off at 6399.
