Help with ID of early 80's Mercury
Can someone point me in the right direction with some specs for this engine? Displacement, etc. I'm considering having it rebuilt and possibly "built up" if its worthwhile. I'd like to know what I have when looking for parts or talking to shops. I can hold my own with automotive stuff but don't know jack about outboards. It should be the original powerhead as far as I know since it's been in my family since '81 and never been apart. I can get more pictures of specific spots if needed. Thanks!

2.0 liter, vertical front half. Will probably have the early head pattern with the head bolts on the cylinders. Not the most desireable but I like ‘em. What hull are you planning to put it on? They will run hard on something small/light like a Hydrostream.

Will be going on the Viking that I'm restoring in another thread. I'll snap some pictures with the cowl off this week, I thought I had some on my phone. It was well maintained throughout its life and still turns over. If this thing can be gone through and freshened up for a reasonable price and be worthwhile I'd go that route. Other option is to save some coin and buy a complete 225 Pro max, EFI is appealing.

If it has good compression and leakdown maybe just go through the carbs and run it as is. It should push your Viking 70 or maybe a little more.

Those motors last FOREVER. Do as Nitro stated. Compression and leakdown if available. If it checks good clean carbs ,rebuild fuel pump prob, fuel lines ,water pump etc. When was it run last?

Heres a few more shots of the power head. The wiring could use some help I'll get down to work on this once the hull goes out to gel coat. Thanks for the help guys!

I have a 1980 150 V6 (same block as your 175 - 2 litre/122 ci) that I have had since new and it still runs like the first day.
Use good fuel and good oil.
Only major parts I have had to replace are the stator and the switch boxes.
Mercs from 1980 thru 1983 all had the same cowl decals.
