Sea rayder F16 175 sport jet 65 mph

I got to ask, has anyone gotten a 16 foot sea rayder up to 65 mph? I working at doing a new power head in one. leaning doing a 225 pro max ish power head, I've also looking at doing a place diverter for it. but that will cost more than the power head. $2000 last I looked and its from over seas where that race sport jets in sprint boats.

The challenge is modifying a SJ pump that will absorb the power required to move a heavy 'glass boat 65 MPH.

so what is the best a stock can perform with more power? or is more power a waste of time and money?

There are variables, however stock pumps start dropping off +/- 6K.

so a pro max is a waste of money because of the 6000 limit. So is the 240 sport jet a different pump?

200, 210, 240 pumps are the same. And, aside from impellers and external differences, the 120XR2 (not the XR) and all V6 SJ pumps move the same amount of water. The early 240 is based on the 2.5L ProMax platform and IMO offer the best bang for the buck.

So how are they getting 240 hp out of a pro max without spinning above 6000 rpm?

Just guessing, but I'd say it's because the ProMax is rated at the prop, the Sport Jet is probably crank rated...

When it comes to powerheads, there's folks on here far more knowledgeable than I. However, the early 240 PH and ProMax PH, are similar. Keep in mind that unlike a prop, jet drives spin up quickly, thus the 240 SJ is tuned to produce from mid to 6K RPMs. Side note; going back a number of years, I recall Jay Smith building a few 240 PHs that spun SJ input shafts +6500 RPMs. However, the extra R's failed to improve performance.

    Nitro-Rat-
Just FYI, the 240 is rated at the impeller shaft. I've heard stories of the earliest 240 SJ PHs producing 260-280 at the crank.

from what I'm finding is that the 240 sport jet and a 225 pro max out board are mostly the same. the outboard being rated at the prop and the jet being rated at the crank. So I'm going with using a pro max build for my sport jet. and I'm going to try to build a trim for the nozzle. if nothing more than for the rooster tail.

I hesitate to be a Debbie Downer, however there's many hurdles to overcome to make this dream a reality. One issue that has not been addressed is modifying the hull to make room for the SJ expansion chamber and external mufflers.

A couple years ago, I purchased a decent, 240 powered 16' Sugar Sand Tango for under $5K. I pulled the power and gave the hull away.

sugar sands where known to fail with standard power, much less added power. a sea ray is a over built boat, and also heavy and slower. my plan is to leave the stock 175 pump and exhaust. so it will still go down thru the pump. most of the places I want to run my jet have 35 mph speed limits. so I mainly going for a fun take off. and looking at the bottom, I not sure what it would do going fast.

and I got to ask, how much power do you think I'll be losing running the 175 exhaust down thru the pump. the main goal is to have f a fun boat to go swimming off of and to keep it simple.

To achieve your main goal, my advice would be to stick w/the 175 and run high quality synthetic to keep the smoke down.

the last 175 I had didn't smoke much, I keep the oil pump. the power head the boat came with had 3 holes in it, So I have to build something. the questions started when the shop had a pro max sitting there, so do you build a pro max, or do you use a std block and build 200 hp, or do you stay with the 175 spec, with is about 150 hp. the stick is the money invested doesn't change much. I already own a 21 checkmate with a pro max, so this jet is just for fun. and run the Mississippi if it keeps flooding.
