A Little Confused - Advance module?

I have a 1987 XR2 - I've had it for some years now - and my mechanic says that it doesn't have an advance module on it. I've read and understand that the idle stabilizer is crap, but what about the advance module? If the module is gone where should the static timing be set? I've been having some problems with it surging badly at high cruise speed, and sometimes from that speed if I bury the throttle it will die, at like 5000 rpm. We're trying to troubleshoot the problem. Thx.

idle speed control/stabilizer only on your xr2.. sometimes described as "rev limiter".. yours had stabilizer, never had a "limiter".. it would have been mounted on top of tha air annunciator.. they can be a pia so most float test 'em pretty quick...…….

problem sounds like fuel delivery of some sort.. age/condition lines from tank all tha way to carbs condition?.. maybe carbs and/or fuel pump need a little attention.. cleaned with all new gaskets inside and out.. I would do max of 20* crankin (no stabilizer) for now..

idle/timin', rpm is set in tha water, in gear.. whatever makes ya "both" happy.. numbers don't mater..

What I'm hearing and reading is that this outboard had an advance module on it from the factory, not an idle speed stabilizer. I'm also reading that people with these older motor removed the advance module. I can understand removing the idle stabilizer, but why the advance module?

Yes remove it to.. if it was to go hay wire it would send ur timing thru the roof and burn up piston
