    SRX alternative

    Hi all,

I tried about 10 different props and the SRX feels and runs the best on my HST.

What props run similar to the SRX?

What are the characteristics of the SRX? Medium bow and stern lift?

    Thanks!

Why are you looking for an alternative to the best prop you've run? If you want more, send it to DAH and let them work it for you...

I'll offer my opinion based on my personal experience. Mercury Chopper II is my fastest ever and best handling prop period. My 29 SRX experienced repeated blowouts at the 1-1/2" above pad setup and 88/89 mph mark on my Allison XB2002. I'd get up to speed and during final trim set, the rpm would rise and the bow drop. After 1/2 dozen of these occurrences, I dropped the gearcase back down in the water where the prop was buried.

A brand new 30" Chopper II allowed me to return to the 1 1/2" height where I could easily trim for best attitude and reduced steering torque. While I was extremely happy with it out of the box, I had a friend - Jimmy at Mercury Racing that encouraged me to have their shop Blueprint the prop specifically for my Allison and SS Merc ProMax. This prop still hangs on my wall, I've ran it twice to a best of 96.2 mph. My goals exceeded and no regrets, I don't need to go that fast.

While my Allison is nothing like your HST, I know that my Chopper II worked better for me. It tolerated more height, carried the bow far better, and converted rotation to forward thrust far better than the SRX. Even at a height where the SRX could bite, the rpm and speed my Chopper II 30 will run is just better. I can turn the 30 to a higher rpm with much better speeds simply because I can raise the gearcase and let the blades surface. The SRX just did not have the lift and could not handle surfacing with a light weight Allison in front of it - even with 14" of setback. Gordon

A Chopper is larger diameter than an SRX and has more blade area. Both aid in elevated running height.
The Chopper also has more cup which helps carry weight and hold in elevated trim settings.

A 29” SRX was the best all around prop for my STV River Rocket.

I have a set of 27’s for my Checkmate project although stock they don’t carry weight well.

Everyone tells me they have to be worked to be great props.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

My srx has been worked but I dont know by who...

Last time I checked it I saw that the tip of the blad has been bent. No nick or ding. I suspect it's from the wooden block when putting the prop on!? Sucks big time!

I also have a spinelli dr4, chopper 28 & 30 and hoss HPD 30. They are all within 1 mph of the srx.

The srx just feels the best. You can also see it on picture that the boat just lays best with the srx.

Now I can just sit down and relax but I'm quite confident there is another props that works better. Knowing that the srx runs well I think I have to search that way....

Besides that my engine swings the srx29 to almost 7k RPMS. I would like to bring them down to 6500rpms.

Another similar wheel is a Yamaha drag but a 28 is the biggest I’ve seen and scarce.

Ive run a bunch of them and are great wheels.
Like the SRXs though, they are better after being worked.

I had a 26P yam drag. It was way too small so never ran it WOT. Felt good.

The drag 4's are availabe in higher pitches...

I sometimes feel there is always a better prop out there somewhere. The key is no one prop is the answer. Gordon likes the Chopper II on his Allison. I found those props spooky on my SS 2000 two motors ago.

Small ear choppers - I used to love those, and Hoss Tritons. I ran a stock SRX, nothing special

If you send your prop to DAH ( what I would do) ask him not to thin it when it's worked. ET lightining is also a fast prop on your hull if you can try one.

Not sure how old your Spinelli DR4 is but its probably not the right one for your application and especially if it was not built for your boat.
We custom build each propeller for its intended power and hull.
We can build you a brand new one with a warranty for your application.

    It's not build to order.
I wouldn't dare running one built to order on my river with all the trash in it!

    It's a 33P. Pulls pretty good for being a 33P!
