    Powerhead swap?

Can anyone tell me if a 1987 40 hp Johnson powerhead will swap to a 1985 50 hp motor? I’m pretty sure the base gaskets are the same !!! Thank you!!!

It should bolt right up, everything got different in 1989.. I just put a 1984 power head i rebuilt on a 1978 mid all fit perfect.. there are 2 different spline configurations but 85 and 87 will be the same..

JUst sayin. If i were to go trouble of yanking powerhead on a little twin Id tear it down have it bored and rebuild it. kits cheep and its easy. A twin is simple then you know just what you have. Get a wsm kit for under 400.00 comes with all gaskets bearings and pistons size of your choice.

That was my original plan, but my crank was damaged. Still gonna rebuild the 50, but I found a powerhead that is complete with carbs, coils, stator, Cdi box,and 120 lbs on each cylinder , everything for 500 and didn’t wanna pass it up if it would work
