I kinda like the 'lectric shift...it's neat! I just drilled the boss on a '72 65 powerhead to fit the mechanical shifter linkage. Another 'lectric shift bites the dust! I shed a single tear when he cut the wires to the lower...

Just needs a 1/2" ID x 3/4" long bushing to make it work now...

I know this is hijacking.....Nitro, any chance you have some instructional details on the conversion from electric to manual shift? I have a 1972 Evinrude 50 horse that I would like to change to manual shift. Thanks, Gordon

Gordon, the boss on the 'lectric shift isn't near as beefy as the one on the manual shift. It is a split boss instead of solid. After a little careful measuring it was determined that the hole for the shift rod should be 1/2". I found that I did have a 1/2" drill bit in my box!

We used a caliper to find the center of the undrilled side of the 'lectric shift boss. We then drilled a pilot hole in this boss. Next we came throug from the drilled side of the boss with a bit that was about the same size as the existing hole (maybe 3/8 or something?). The reason for this is the inner face of the boss is not flat. The pilot hole gave us something to center the bit. Coming in from the other drilled side theoretically squared everythig up. That accomplished, we ran the 1/2" bit through.

We determined that we will need a 1/2" ID x 3/4" long bushing to make up for the boss being shorter on the 'lectric shift block.

The '72 65 powerhead will be going on a '74 70 leg. We will be using the pan from the 'lectric so there is a hole that has to be drilled for the shift rod to pass through. The 70 hp carbs will be going on along with some of Chris Carson's reeds. To top it off it will be getting a tiller handle conversion...

Here is the boss on the manual shift block for comparison. It's the only other pic I took.

NP, I don't remember those outboards. I went back and looked at the first page of your build thread and have some questions. Does this vintage have the same transom bolt pattern as the 70's ~ current outboards do? As I do not see a steering tube on your bracket, will you retain the cable/pulley system originally installed on your boat? I ask this because I have two older 3 cylinder Chrysler outboards that I'm restoring and neither have steering tubes. I'm thinking about having an add-on steering tube fabricated and sandwiched between the tilt bolt to allow for the safer and available through-bracket steering. The only other option to the cables/pulleys would be to use a transom mounted cable anchoring bracket which I have not yet found a cable system to.

Thanks again for the hijack.....now I'm talking Chryslers

My only experience with the Johnrude V-4's is older 50's and 75's. The 80 with the small unit seems fairly rare, and because of the smaller prop, obviously has a different gear ratio.

The motor slides down between 2) cast brackets that are bolted to the transom first, then is retained in place by some anchor bolts.
Feels a little weak if you were going to abuse the boat.
I'm going to hang it on some of my own brackets to attain a better running height.

Yes I am going to retain the "string" steering, mostly for the nostalgic look and feel. I'm doing some bottom work and going to try for high 50's maybe 60 mph. I feel the cable steering will be OK in this range, the boat will be equipped with a kill switch and lanyard.

If I were in your spot I'd probably go with the single jacketed cable steering, possibly a no feed back system.

Hijack? ... No way were you hijacking this thread, Did I tell you I was switching to "adidas"

NP, awesome boat. AND motor! That motor is from the early days of my boating addiction, used to have ALL the motor catalogs and had memorized much of it. The 60 was manual shift and the 80 could be had manual or electric as I recall.
Don't fear those transom brackets if they are undamaged. That is the same as used on the 3cyl 15" motors run in classes EP, SE, and SST60. I have seen them spin, barrel roll (did that once myself) and blow over and never fail a bracket. I doubt you will ever experience that!
Again, great rig. Keep us posted, and some more pictures.
