I was told by an engineer the rods are first heat treated (hardened) after that they are completely coated then the coating is removed in the areas they harden further for the bearing surfaces surfaces, this keeps the beam area from getting too hard or brittle..

It's more of a copper color or gold color, just never seen any rods coated before...this is on a 1995 200 xri...pulled intake to do injector service and reeds and stuffers.

Somebody posted a video (probably) years ago showing the rod manufacturing process. It was some aftermarket 2 stroke motorcycle/snowmobile stuff I think. It was pretty cool. Yeah, the copper coating is part of the heat treat I think. Many beers ago...

No not new unfortunately all original as far as i know, just bought in August of this year. Motor had 115 compression across all 6 when i pulled the plugs out there seemed to be a lot of carbon in motor on the pistons. Been running it heavy on the quickleen in the fuel and running Pennzoil in the oiling system and just rechecked compression and it's up to 120 cold and pistons looking cleaner. It did not run right when i bought and wound up putting computer in it and electric fuel pump, previous owner said something about all the injectors where replaced and they look new.

no worries, so long as you don't see any blue ones..........

We broke down about 15 v6 2.4-5 blocks in the shop last year and most the rods were that color.

Going with CCM sport reed's and block stuffers...Had a couple of the reed's that where in it open to about .030..
Was just unusual for me to see colored rods in a motor...lolDaddy taught me to never force anything but to just get a bigger hammer.

A steel rod ( like 8620 ) that use's the bores as the outer race has to be maluable enough to not shatter like glass around it's outer perimeter of the bores and along the beam. Yet the bores have to be carborized to a case hardness of over 60 Rockwell in order to live in that environment. The copper plating wards off the direct heat where it is not wanted.
Bottom guided rods like the 3.0L engines have go one step farther. After heat treat they are painted/coated on the big end so they can be protected from the process of silver plating the thrust faces. This is to provide a barrier of dissimilar metal so there is no steel to steel contact between rod and crank cheek.

Is the rev limiter in the idle stabilizer or computer on this 1995 200 xri?

Lots of correct comments above. We copper plate and heat treat our gears in house. Copper plating is being used to prevent the diffusion of carbon in the carburizing(heat treatment process). Only surfaces that you want carburized and very hard are all the wearing contacting surfaces such as gear faces bearing races etc. The rest is masked with copper plate to decrease brittleness and increase toughness.
