I did not wait to load the story..... but think of the early days when Merc 800s started in gear.....and stop meant the motor stopped running and R meant the motor started up backwards if you were quick nuf to get it stared and not hit the dock......AKA DOCKBUSTERS......

I believe it was the Merecury 78A called a direct-reversing engine. It may have had 2 starters, my memory's not what it used tobe.

You must be older than me..... NOT... heehee..... ran a 800 dr on my 15 checkmate..... with a SM lower unit......nicest smmoth running motor.... Ya just gotta know how to place stop and dock.... oars are cheating.......I have a Mk 78 in my shop and a Merc 800 in the yard....Drs both.... got old.....not milk. Been saving old mercs......since I had no sense...THATS a LOONG time......

Most people that Don't know think the 2 coils are for different rotation.....Naaaa Merc man carl knew the 6 cly 2 stroke would phase out the coils limit..... so it was 2 coil for each bank of 3..... the starter had 2 bendix gears....each one for a diff roataion.....2 solionods and to late to spell......The distubuter... had a slack in the coulpling that would let the timing have nuf to let the linkage bump over tdc.....when dist ran its limit..... BaL BaLLLL BaLLLLa.... Who cares..... how it worked.....it did....

Typical tourists...everyone thinks they can operate a boat. These people cause more havoc down here on our waterways. It'd be nice (and far fetched) if the stae mandated and enforced at minimum boating certificates.

I have always been amazed anyone would rent out a boat. Not all that many boat owners know what their doing let alone complete novices.

Louisiana finally passed a bill making new operators take a boaters safety course to operate a water craft.
