Two Racing Legends and their boats from the FVRC regatta last weekend

Figured I needed to share a few pictures. Kenny Kitson and Gene Lanham with the boats they used to set multiple world records back in the day. So glad they both could make it. History here for sure...

Mercury Outboards capitalizes on clamping onto innovative hulls.
Switzer Wing & Molinari Tunnel hulls help Outboards compete competitively against inboards.

Mercury Marine (Carl Kiekhaefer) saw the potential of the Wing hull designed and upgraded by the Switzer brothers, Dave and Bob. Circa 1961, Mr. Kiekhaefer “bought the exclusive rights to the 18-foot fiberglass wings”. Racers Dave Craig and Johnny Bakos won multiple times the Gold Coast Marathon races, over inboard powered hydros and flat bottom boats. Racers like Ken Kitson and Gene Lanham continued the Switzer Wings winning ways.

However, then in circa 1966, a Mercury team of managers and six drivers went to Europe and competed in the Paris 6 Hour. A new innovated hull by Angelo Molinari in Italy won the race, with his son Renato driving. Mercury saw the potential of this wooden tunnel hull, and purchased a hull and painted the number 888 on the boat.

Mercury eventually did a business contract with the Molinari family, and racing history was created. Mercury Outboards & Molinari Tunnel Hulls together generated numerous F1 trophy wins by drivers like … Renato Molinari, Billy Seebold, Bob Hering, Cees vander Velden, Sirois, Bentz, Spalding, & Percival to name a few.

I was lucky enough back in the 60s and early 70s to see both of these boats and also a Switzer owned by Jack Horner. El lobo run at the Miami Marine Stadium and at pelican harbor. Awesome racing best always a Amberjack.

Jock Horner was one of the principles behind the boat centers of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, a large Maaco dealer back in the 70s and 80s up through the 2000s Chick Gagen was a partner in and managed the Fort Lauderdale store for years Gary Lawson was the manager of the Miami store and probably a partner also both of these guys from old Miami boat racing CG 125 one tough customer on the racecourse. I don’t remember how long Jock had his Switzer but I did see him race at the Miami Marine Stadium several times and I believe the Miami, Key Largo race, which you may have won back in the day, all the amberjack,
