Good steering system
What steering system will have less play and the closest ratio . The hydraulic steering seems to not be as sensitive as the no feed back sea star . My hyd sea star is ok , it has a small leak developing at the end of the cylinder and I am thinking about maybe switching from hydraulic to a no feed back steering system ,open for any ideas . Boat is a 18 HPX maverick flats , with a Vf115 SHO runs mid fifty’s no jack plate . Thanks for any suggestions

cant even fathom the thought of going BACK to cables from hydraulic. Fix the leak and bleed it properly it should work great. If you still want faster lock-to-lock install the next size larger helm. If you now have the 1.7 helm you can step up to the 2.0 or 2.4 if needed.

I don’t do the NFB. True dual cables with dual racks is the only way to go for cable steering. These helms are no longer manufactured. It won’t ever be as smooth as hydraulic.

do you know what helm you have now?
assuming your 4 turns is with a 1.7 helm then:
2.0 helm = 15% less turns or 3.4 lock to lock
2.4 helm = 29% less turns or 2.83 lock to lock
These are just my calculations but I'd guess Seastar has this info available somewhere. I would check with them or a shop that has done more installations than the few I've donelimited skills

Bleeding hydraulics is important, as well as wiping down the rods to clean debris off before they damage the seals.

Higher capacity helm reduces turns lock to lock but increases wheel effort. This can be remedied with a larger diameter wheel if desired.
