Mixing some 1/4 chop strand in with the thickened resin should have kept it from cracking. I used thickened vinyl ester on mine with 1/4 chop, and didn’t crack. I filled my gaps all in one batch the same as you did as well.

I mix milled fibers in my resin first then finish thickening with cabosil. Never had any cracking...but resin thickened with only cabosil will crack in larger voids as it is brittle without either chopped strands or milled fibers.

Don't know if this is right, but I set my limit thickness with thickened Cabosil to 1/4" after that milled fibers. Also, the esters I think tend to be more brittle than epoxys.

Got hot and cracked. Can't fill deep areas like that with just putty. Too much exotherm.... Next time fit a small pc of wood and putty that in then glass over. I wouldn't worry about it being cracked. Won't weaken the trans after glass is over it.

Im unsure about marine epoxy being 100% solid but most quality epoxies are so when they cure there is zero shrink and no cracking as a result. I dont know a thing about the ester stuff

In my case I mixed the carbosil first to get it thickened. Took a while to figure out how much to add. If I would've added the hardener first, then tried to figure out the mix ratio of carbosil, I think I would've run out of time to get it all in before it started to kick.

I've got the transom mostly glassed into place at this point. I have three layers of 1708 over the sides and bottom tabbing it in. Went about 1-2" then about 3-4" and the last at 6-8" I have one piece of 1708 over the entire transom and plan to do one more overlapping the sides by another 6-8" I'll also extend the bottom edge forward about 4" and will wrap the top edge as well. The top edge will get more layers of glass finishing off the splash well when the deck goes back on.
Also started laying down a layer of 1708 across the entire bottom wherever the core was. I want to give that outer layer a bit more strength before putting down the core.
Getting all suited up sure helps cut down on the itch factor.

Very nice. Will be really strong when done.
It's amazing to me how thin the hull gets after it turns up from the hard chine on up to the flanges where the deck meets the hull. Or mine was anyway....seems there were many variations on the builds, mine was 1979 and had float boxes, so I removed mine.
I laid extra layers of 1708 in my transom area too.James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

I believe your using polyester resin(that's what I used on mine)...you might want to check into buying the resin with no wax added so you don't have to sand between layers after cured. My distributor sells it both ways...with and without.

Slow and steady progress, little bit at a time. I'm calling the transom complete at this point. Three layers of 1708 over the edges and two full pieces of 1708 across the entire transom and extending out the sides 10" and 16"
Laid up the next piece of 1708 across the bottom. Ground everything outside of the floor area down to the woven roving, then scuffed it all with a 36 grit on a DA. I'm doing this step due to the amount of holes and repairs done to the bottom of the hull. Just some extra peace of mind.
Had the shop I used to work for take a stab at forming up replacement for the factory trim. I'm very happy with the result, I'm going to try and get this to form to the hull. I might have to order in some softer aluminum. They will be able to form this in 12' sections. Once I have it fitted I'll weld and blend all the seams then attach it to the hull. I really want to keep the factory look.
