1978 Viking rebuild
Here is my '78 Viking that my father and uncle bought in '81. I grew up with this boat, learned to ski behind it, lots of good childhood memories. Like all of them, it needs it all.
My brother and I started this process 12 years ago and tore out the rotten core, stringers, and transom. Split the deck to the windshield to replace the transom without doing a splash well delete. At that point ran out of money. It sat outside, uncovered, and neglected since. Sadly destroying what was beautiful factory gel coat. I've decided that it's time to finish it.
At this point the plan is to completely pull the deck and do the full recore and replace the transom agin. Planning to respray the gelcoat and metal flake to look like the day it was new. Big plans, I know.
I'm thinking the first step will be to get the boat off the trailer and flip it so I can build a cradle to support the hull during the rebuild. Planning to build an exoskeleton of sorts with plywood and lumber to support the strakes. The core-less hull seems very unstable and moves quite a bit just on the trailer bunks. I'll use a piece of aluminum along the pad to keep it as flat as possible.
I don't have much, or any experience with fiberglass, but I've been a metal fabricator/TIG welder for 10+ years, so I can work with my hands and tools with ease. Hopefully with some help here I can finally pull this off. I plan to document the full process and post it here.
Thanks in advance for any advise! Tony.

Looks like your going to have some fun!
You will get good help here for this, there are a lot of good people here that have done what your beginning. Some professional and some hobbyist.
I am doing a 79 V-King now and am almost done with my glass work. I am not a professional, and maybe done some of mine incorrectly, as I tend to "overbuild" stuff.
One thing I know...we love pictures, and your off to a good start.
Scribbed !!
I need to finish adding pictures to the restore thread on mine over on Hippie's site.Last edited by W2F a V-King; 11-16-2018 at 05:55 PM. Reason: Added a Thought...

Thanks for all the response! I haven't made any progress with it yet, other than vacuuming all the crud out. I need to get a few welding projects off my bench before tearing into the boat. Plan is to get if off the trailer and start on the cradle this weekend.

I've been trying to find another with a similar paint scheme for quite some time. I've only found about two or three photos online. It's mostly all silver flake with a touch of blue flake mixed in. Then the line of blue flake across the dash and along the deck/hull seam. I dig the color and hope it can be matched. Plan for Friday is to get it in my buddies shop and use his pressure washer to get the black tree gunk off. I'll post some pictures of it cleaned up to give a better idea.

Got it into my buddies shop and got all the tree sap cleared off. They have some great degreaser that won't damage paint. She looks so much better now! Unfortunately the top side of the bow is pretty damaged from so many years uncovered outside. I've been planning on new gel since the start, so oh well. Now to order up some piles of sand paper. Hope to have it off the trailer Sunday. Heres some more pictures.

Off the trailer and flipped so I can make a cradle. Looks like a fair amount of damage to the hull. I've got my work cut out.
