Researching a truck?
I'm thinking of getting a truck for next tow vehicle. MY TBSS is greta but has a short wheelbase of only 113inches. Thinking towing trailer total of 31ft longer wheelbase would be safer/better. Looking into Ford/GMC/Chevy at this time Ford being only a 5L in the F150 series and the smallest engine how well does it tow compared to GM's 6.2L? The current V6 diesels, but have the same torque as the gas engines so don't think it's worth the added $$$. Also wouldn't want anything older than 4 yrs and needs to be lower miles. Lets hear your +/-'s of what U have along with fuel MPG towing?

Im a fan of asking more to do less with towing. Duramax makes for a hella nice tow rig and beats the others on performance, mileage, and NVH. Not the gruntiest of grunty but for pleasure use a Denali Duramax is hard to beat. That price tag though, ouch.
Gas? Again the 6.2 is the way to go here imo. The small v6 Diesels im not set on either, I dont think they are worth it if your going that way do it right do it once. The 5.0L is not a bad engine but its not a 6.2 and i dont like that numb steering Ford has. All Fords seem to have this but typically Fords are tough, and seem to last, my Dads run for years. Dodge transmissions scare me and seem to have more diff whine and issues than the rest.
I cant say much about all these new multi speed transmissions though. Too many variations and all too new to really know which is the king of the crowd. Allison still wins. I have an 11 6.2 gas and I love that thing. It fliesHydrostream dreamin

The wife has a Denali XL with the 6.2. Plenty of power. I’ve never towed anything heavy any appreciable distance with it though. It does mid teens mpg empty (14-16).
My Dodge 3/4 ton has the 5.7 Hemi and gets high single digits when towing real heavy. I would definitely recommend a gas 3/4 ton for heavier towing. The fuel mileage is a little worse empty than a 1/2 ton usually. I have gotten up to 17 mpg empty on the highway with my Dodge though.
We had a Ford 250 work truck with the big gas V8 (6.4?). Had a loaded service body on it so mpg was bad, it was constantly overloaded. Never lacked power for though...
I would pick whichever is more comfortable for you. If 4x4 is important to you I prefer the non-GM solid axle options. Ford has an optional e-locker rear end.Josh Peterson

Every time I see one of the new Yukons or Burbs I see the same thing. It looks like someone GLUED a 70's jumbo station wagon, ontop of a truck frame and added side skirt ground effects. I dont care for the high riding low profile windows. Fugly
The gen before though? Was my favorite Burb body ever. 07+ style, Avalanche front. I also really like the 01 style Denalis and Escalades always seem to look great, save for the very first one in 99 lol.Hydrostream dreamin

I think there's nothing better, it's a Chevy. Might get a chrome roof rack for it. The one ton came back after Trump took over. Love heated rear seating. Need one! Made in Florida

I’ve had every body style 4 door Suburban except the current one. I’m not a fan. I really don’t like the previous one either (which my wife currently drives). It’s a crappy plastic rattle trap with too many whiz bang gizmos. The 6.2 is impressive but I don’t like the 6 speed transmission.
Most recently I’ve gone from a 96 to a 00, to an 04, back to a 98, now up to an 11. Next one will probably be a 96-99 again. Of course I still drive my 84.Josh Peterson

Had a loner for a week while mine was laid up. K1500 5.3. Great diving, smooth, enough power, great mpg, not one rattle, insulated and what I think was low level sound cancelling noise from the speakers when cruising.

Over the last couple years I've used a RAM 1500 and now a Ford F-150. The Ram had the Hemi with the ZF8 speed, the Ford has the 3.5L Eco-Boost with the 10 speed. Honestly, the Ford (470 lb/ft torque, it's a beast) pulls as well or better than the Ram did but I had to spend a fair amount of $$$ to fix the suspension to my liking (lowered, shocks, sway bars, etc.). The Ram only needed some decent shocks after 10K miles. Considering you tow a hell of a lot less than you drive so ride quality and economy without load should really be factored into the equation.
With the 2019 Ram refresh I'm likely to trade into one of those and out of the Ford next year. I just like the overall driving and towing dynamics of the Ram over any of the other full sized trucks, including the Chevy/GMC lineup. When I do I will go with their 4-Corner air suspension since when I tow the trailers range from 1500 - 6000 lbs but is used without towing 90% of the time.
If I were to go with a GM product I would absolutely only look at something with the 6.2L and 10 speed trans. The 5.3L with 6 speed is horrible and the 8 speed GM trans has serious reliability issues.Last edited by mjw930; 11-13-2018 at 01:32 PM.

Just got back from Ford dealer and drove a few F-150 XLT's Sport package
1- 2.7L eco 325HP and 400FTLBS TQ 10 speed trans 3.73 gears
2- 5.0L 395HP and 400ftlbs TQ 10 speed trans 3.31 gears
The 2.7 had better pulling power and choice than the 5.0L
Working to get the 3.5 eco next time there and can't wait to drive which I think is the best choice and all rated to tow 10,000 +/- a few pounds

The ecoboost is great, for 80-100K miles then... head gasket issues begin. If its a short term deal they are worth considering, but boosted gas for towing? Ticking time bomb imo
