    SAY Whaaaat...???!!?!?!

Check this out. Mercury heard your plight and the new 300R V8 & Verado 400R have Adaptive Speed Control (ASC) which eliminates the need for a throttleman. That's right! Now, your Mercury Outboard is Smarter than YOU!!! When your boat leaves the water, makes a turn or hits a big wave/wake... it can automatically sense the load change and limit the throttle as needed to save the driveline from shock or over-revving.

    Hey Dave---entire

I wasn't kidding about the 'red dot rev-limiters'-----

You and I know the reputation of the wonderful-shiftable-triple shaft BP's (BAD)

But we did run 500 mile races with all four throttles bungeed down!

I rebuilt all four units after every race--

Ran entire season--(10 races)--one failure--broken distributor cap while leading the Bahamas 500--for over 400 miles!!

It did take a lot of maintenance--

Can some racers or others in the know chime in and inform me please?

Two sets of eyes are way better then one when you have boats on both sides of you going into sharp turns as well.

You need to go for a few laps and it would become clear.

Raced my 24 Skater in the early 90's, when it was ruff, no way one person could do it. We had intercoms and could communicate, constantly talking back and forth. Looking for turn markers and steering was more than a full time job.

I understand why you would ask this question, a five minute blast down a calm lake, no problem, 90 miles on the great lakes, a whole different story.

Thanks for bringing it up, it was a nice walk down memory lane!

Those guys are so secured in those seats and cockpits, there's no way that having the driving duties split is anything but dangerous!

Thinking about sharing the operation of a vehicle with another human just gives me the creeps.

If that gives you the creeps then you definitely wouldn't do well in going into the first turn. Its not a "one hand on the wheel moment" I can assure you.

A half mile off the beach on the outer straight and being able to see one end of the course to the other doesn't qualify for off shore? LOL... It does make it easy for the drivers "no more navigator" and great for the spectators. I can remember as a kid waiting for what seemed like forever to see the boats come around on their next lap.

Offshore nowadays is basically "circuit racing" at best. Spectator appeal and the logistics/liabilities of covering that much race course make it that way sadly.

This is a great video to show things...

Both hands on the wheel, unless or was to flick you the bird real quick.

Seriously I don't get your statement, if there's only one operator then the hand throttles go in the trash. No need to take hands off the wheel
