I would pull the float boxes first. The whole deal can probably be done from the inside. Get all the damaged area out and rig up a mold on the outside to work in to so that the final finish work needed on the outside is minimal.

If you are using epoxy resin, you might like stitched 1700 better. Epoxy has a hard time getting thru the mat. ;-)

I was thinking epoxy because it’s 1 pump for 1 pump easy I don’t have to think.

That depends on the pumps you get. The pumps US Composites sell are the same ones. Meaning same displacement on one stroke. The 3:1 I used was 3 pumps of one and 1 pumps of the other, resin-activator. Very easy and accurate.

Check the accuracy of your pumps regularly. If you are considering measuring by weight, resin and hardener usually have different densities. So the ratio for measuring by weight will usually be different to the ratio for measuring by volume.

I don't use the pumps, I like the old fashioned marked cup and/or graduated stick method. Very accurate and cheap.

    Yes, that is fail proof.
I bought a stack of marked cups and used a magic marker to make sure each mix was the same. Cause sometimes while pumping.... Was that two or three.....

Hey James. How is your boat going?
I always measure mine by weight. Less mess and more accurate. We use a resin that is
100:28 by weight, and 100:34 by volume.

Dang it I can hook anything up to a wire and have it work correctly, but wahwah 100 wahwah 100 ever watch peanuts cartoons... The west systems is 1 for 1 and they have the filler plus different speeds I could play with.

Is it that important to have each batch 100% exactly the same?

Are you saying that West is a bad idea?

Should I use US and go back to old school measuring?

The pump systems are great for backyarders. Just don't leave them unused with resin in them for months and expect them to be accurate. Most pros prefer to weigh the resin because we use scales everyday. The point I was making regarding the ratio is that it is not always as simple as 3:1. You do not vary the resin:hardener ratio with epoxy like you can vary the catalyst percentage with polyester or vinylester. Varying the ratio will produce a cured laminate with inferior mechanical properties. If you want it to go off faster or slower, get a faster or slower hardener.

Hey Greg, boat is coming along very slowly due to circumstances beyond my control. Hasn't been a good health year for me, but getting better....just in time for winter ...go figure. BUT ... I have bought a propane heater for my basement, so hopefully I can work all winter long The hull core and stringers, seat box is done and will attach the deck to the hull next.

Yes, US Composites and others sell all kinds of different ratios, and their pumps work well for a hobbyist level amateur like me. I have only restored a handful of boats over the years, men like Greg, XstreamVKing are doing these things for a living on profession level. Their advice is golden, imo !

Both of these men and more like Outasite helped me more than I could have imagined, Thank you !!

The pumps work well for a project with calibrated marked cups to verify, then toss them and buy new for the next project, and from the company that makes the resins you are using. You talk to their tech support on specifics about how to use and apply their products.....jmo

I had no issues using the pumps on my project so far, and only one step left to do before painting.

Mixing small amounts and using quick will work better than a larger batch, imo...if it sets very long in a deep batch it will kick off faster than a small batch. Just like poly.
